Yellow Fin at the FADS

Monday, 2 Feb 04, was a great day for yellowfin fishing. Took a local Japanese charter out of AWASE to FAD #11. It was a cloudy day, and rained off and on, but that didn't stop the yellowfin and mahi-mahi from biting. If you go out, make sure you have the captain get close to the FAD to catch some of the bait fish. I caught this 60lb yellowfin freelining an 8 inch rainbow runner. It took me a little over 45 minutes to bring him in on #6 P-line and my G-series rod with Penn 535 graphite reel. When you hook up the bait, make sure you use a circle hook and run it from one side of the nose to the other. This lets the bait swim freely and keeps it alive longer. When the fish takes the bait let it run for a count of 3 to 5 seconds then flip the switch and just hold on. No need to set the hook with a circle hook, it will do the work for you. Good luck and tight lines from Okinawa!

Water was slightly rough at Bolo Point just up from Torii Station. About three miles off trolling with Japanese Screw lures (available at any Shimano/Daiwa store) Good luck in winter yielded me four Chinnok and one Wahoo 27 pounds and four ounces.

Has anyone had any success catching trevally on Okinawa? Is it possible to catch them in Orwan Bay? Can they be chummed? Any advice would be appreciated.

Went out the first weekend after a typhoon, 22 Jun 03. The current was strong and only a few small Yellowfin were hitting. We decided to troll using my Tuna Stick and Penn 9/0. Only one lure was hitting, Black and white Marlin Lure. Well, it held up to it's end of the bargin. 2 Wahoo, 1-20 plus pound yellowfin, and the grand daddy of them all, a blue marlin. Was a small one of only 130 pounds, but hey the first one I've ever seen caught in person. Beats the heck out of TV!! Congratulations Don Hall!! Let's go fishing!!!

Okinawa fishing starting to heat up in May

Marlin, wahoo, and mahimahi (dorado) have arrived in big numbers on the East China Sea (west) side of Okinawa. Most of the action is west of Aguni-shima, 30 miles northwest of Kadena. There have been several fine, flat-calm fishing days lately.

Thought you might enjoy the attached photo. The tail belongs to a 485-lb blue caught 11 May on Dave Sloss's YURIKAGO, a 35-foot Yamaha that I crew on now and then. The fish was on its way to be printed at a local tackle shop. Hope someone has a wall big enough for a 12-foot print. Only two men were aboard, and they had a tough time getting the fish onto the swim platform, with a shark 8 feet or so long cruising on the surface a few feet away. It looks like a bronze whaler in the photos. Dr. Park, the angler, pushed it away with a gaff, and it never got a bite of the marlin. It took Dr. Park under an hour to bring the fish boatside, using 80-lb line on a 50W-LRS on a stand-up battle station.

YURIKAGO released a baby marlin, estimated at 90 lbs., a week before, and two others slightly bigger the week before that. CHEERS, the only charter boat at Kadena Marina, captained by Mark Medges, got a 250-ish blue May 3. Jeff's Boat, a 28-foot Yamaha that may or may not have a real name, lost three marlin in two trips -- one big girl after a three-hour fight. He has respooled all his 50-lb reels with Yo-Zuri Hybrid, which tests at over 70 lbs. He's closing the gate after the cow is out, as we say back in Arkansas.

I hooked and lost two marlin 11 May, on a private trip on CHEERS. The first never got hooked well because when the fish hit, we had slowed down to idle for the three of us to reel in five dorado hooked at once. The second took out half the line on my 50W-LRS and then doubled back and jumped very near the boat, trailing my brand-new Williamson Marlin Catcher on a long leader -- but not my line. Too much belly, I guess. And my line (YoZuri Hybrid 50) probably got nicked when the five mahi did their cross-and-jump routine. Always check when you put lines back out! I hope the fish doesn't have to drag that lure for long. Maybe a wahoo will cut off the head, which slid down to the loop end.

The Pacific side has also had good fishing in May. Jose Caban reports hot fishing for dorado and wahoo at Prefectural Buoy #11, on 11 May. The number of wahoo there made vertical jigging for tuna nearly impossible, and he gave up after losing a few $20 jigs. Something even cut his cable leader off a Yo-Zuri Bonito. He says the number of tuna strikes goes way down if you use wire leaders. But sometimes there's no choice, as at Diego Garcia, where the dogtooth tuna cut off everything that's not wire and some that is.

Steve Wright, charter captain and manager of the White Beach recreation facility, reports fast and steady action trolling May 4-10 on the Pacific side for nice mahimahi, 20 to 30 pounds, and a few wahoo and school yellowfin.

Jigging In Okinawa

The FADS are producing nice catches of big eye tuna and wahoo, when jigging the 40-80 meter line, around the FADS. Dorado can also be found, most of them caught on 'sururu', a type of glass minnow used by drifters.Long jigs are recommended when the ho's show up, as they tend to cut any jig smaller than 6-8 inches long. Tigh lines from Okinawa!!!

Once again,as the water cools off,the FADS in Okinawa are getting hot! Packs of wahoo attacked my lure spread on October 5,all landed on Purple Ninja Bonitas,13 in total! Single ball bearing hooks are a must,as I let some friends fight the fish and the fish got 8 head-shakers that won their freedom after pulling of the double hooks. With ended up with 32 big eye tunas and 8 dodos also. The cooler the water, the hotter the FAD!!!

The best Memorial Day I've had was spent doing what I love to do...Fishing!! Went out with local american Chris Pancoast. We were Drift fishing the Piles out of Awase and had a hell of a day. We trolled out of the maribna all the way to the piles, and on the first pass right at the the piles both rods went off. The Wahoo hit a yellow fin colored marauder and the Mahi hit a marlin lure. Throughout the day we caugt fish everytime we trolled and numerous mahi and tunas drift fishing. Lastly, we lost many fish drift fishing live rainbow runners. One was cut in half. All-in-All 12 Mahi and 1 Wahoo, with many Yellowfin and Rainbow Runners.

Winter is still kicking in Okinawa, but that means great amberjack and grouper catches on the east side of the island. Just drop one of many japanese jigs available in the local stores and wind fast with some jerks,to sample some of the greatest emotions,by having your jig pounded by a hefty grouper or amberjack. The FADS on the west side, still slow, with some small big eyes tunas, runners and the occasional mahi. But March should bring some warmer water and with that some of the biggest mahis found anywhere, along with big eyes, yellowfins, wahoo and some early migrating marlin. This month troll some medium size liquidators(bleeding dorado color)and you might encounter some of those early bird marlins or hefty bull mahi, always looking for a snack.
