Endless Season Update October 03, 2010
REPORT #1232 'Below the Border'
Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996
East Cape
There was a little stutter in the action
and then after a tropical storm breezed
over the top of East Cape. Then as
October arrive the fishing roared right
back to life. Football sized tuna to
eighty pounders with some much larger
being lost after long tedious battles
that were won by the fish.
Meanwhile the nice sized dorado good
sized up to twenty.
Inside of ten mile the sailfish and
stripers were biting and there were
enough blue surprise bites make it tough
to decide which tackle to use.
Inshore action remained good for a
variety of species including roosters,
small jacks, lady fish and pompano
though there were more school sized fish
and less Bubba class.
There were a few larger fish seen from
the beach but they were tough to get to.

Greg Gordon, Baltazar Sequires and
Gerardo Ferrand sent this report The
best fishing trip of our lives. I have
lived full time in Loreto and spend a
lot of time fishing here and have always
done very good.....But nothing like
this!! 2 days catch includes: 12 - Wahoo
- 50 to 86 LBS, 14 - Dorado - 15 to 40
LBS, 25 - Yellowfin Tuna - 15 to 35 LBS,
9 - Yellowtail - 20 to 35 LBS and 3 -
Whale Shark Rides at break time! Your
experienced crew, accommodations and
service is unmatched anywhere in Baja!
Thanks again and we will see you soon!
Greg Gordon....…Bob Hoyt
Just like that the wahoo kick off the
season on the Thetis and those in the
know are there in a heartbeat. Lance
Peterson raced up from East Cape and
filled the cooler in one day ith 6 nice
sized wahoo. I swung by the following
day and he passed off a fillet.
He also added that he was bit within a
minute of dropping the Marauder in the
wake. Later that night I delivered it to
Jill and Jonathan at their terrific
Tailhunter restaurant in La Paz. In no
time it was back at my table prepared
two different ways. According to the few
boats fishing the bank there were
stripeys in zone as well.
Inshore? I forgot to ask
Current Magdalena Bay Weather

Zihuatanejo, Mainland Mexico
There is not much to say about this week
for the fishing. The 83° blue water is
still out at the 1,000 fathom curve (30
miles), but there is clean water within
6 miles of the beach.
There are very few people fishing and
tourism is slow. Most of the captains
are taking this time for the opportunity
for their annual maintenance of the
boats. They are pulling them out of the
water for new paint, bottom paint,
repairing last year’s dings in the fiber
glass, etc.
The one bright note is the heavy rains
we experienced this year have let up and
the rain season is just about over. This
will bring the blue water back close to
the beach, and most of all, clear up the
inshore waters for our anticipated
excellent action for roosters.... …Ed

Cabo San Lucas
The water warmed right back up and with
it came the big marlin. Last Sunday a
blue marlin was weighed in at #780, and
just yesterday (Saturday) there was a
reported #1,200 brought in, also a blue
marlin. That last fish has not been
confirmed by me as I just heard about it
yesterday in the evening. There have
been plenty of nice fish in the 200-300
pound class caught as well, and there
have been striped marlin found on the
Pacific side in the slightly cooler
water.
There has been little change in the
yellowfin tuna action. The fish have
been found in all the usual places, the
Outer Gordo Bank, the Inman Bank, the
1,000 fathom line on the Cortez side, 40
miles to the south, south of the San
Jaime Bank, and just the other day we
had a brief showing of decent fish just
five miles off of the lighthouse on the
Pacific side. Most of the fish had been
football-sized, but those off of the
lighthouse had fish to 120 pounds, and
those off of the banks have been
producing occasional fish that were that
size and even larger. Almost all of the
larger fish on the banks have been
caught on live bait, while around half
the fish found offshore in the porpoise
have been lure-caught fish.
Good sized dorado remained decent with
an average weight of around 18 pounds
with lots of fish in the 30 to 35 pound
class. We had one angler land a bull
dorado that weighed over 50 pounds,
possibly as large as 60 pounds, along
with several others in the 30 pound
class, and they released plenty more.
Most boats were able to get limits of
these fish without trying hard.
A few wahoo were caught, but the bite
has remained sporadic. They were caught
either on the high spots or found
offshore while looking for tuna.
The pangas were fishing near-shore from
100 feet deep to around five miles from
the beach due to flat water conditions
and the numbers of dorado to be found so
most of the inshore action consisted of
dorado, roosterfish and jack crevalle,
with an occasional snapper or grouper.
Almost every boat there was able to
limit out if they wanted. George and

CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT
Capt. George Landrum
Fly Hooker Sportfishing
www.flyhooker.com
gmlandrum@hotmail.com
Sept. 20-26, 2010
Weather: We had a late developing tropical storm hit us on Tuesday. On Monday it was just an area of disturbed weather, then quickly became a depression, then by the evening had become Tropical Storm Georgette, with winds gusting to 45 mph. It passed a bit to the east of us, between us and San Jose with winds to 40 mph and about 3 inches of rain over 24 hours. The rain was nice to get, not too much but enough that as of yesterday there was green all over the desert as the grass started to sprout and the cactus started to bloom. As a result of the storm, the air temperature dropped by about 5 – 10 degrees with our daytime highs in the mid 80's and the nighttime lows in the mid to high 70's. At least for the first few days, then it started to creep up again. The rest of the week was partly cloudy with an occasional little spit of moisture, nothing you could call rain and just barely noticiable.
Water: The wind and swells resulting from the late developing Tropical Storm Georgette caused the Port Captain to close the port on Tuesday, and for good reason. It re-opened Wednesday just after daylight, and by then the swells had almost dissapeared but there was still an occasional bit of wind. The churning of the water along with the overcast that came along caused the water temperatures to drop an average of 5 degrees. The Sea of Cortes showed 80 to 83 degrees, starting from the Cape and working northward while the Pacific side had a cold band of 75 degree water from the lighthouse to the southwest, and outside of that, atop the San Jaime and the Golden Gate Banks the water warmed a bit to 80 degrees, and just a few miles farther west the water warmed again to 82 degrees.
Bait: The full moon has resulted in a lack of Caballito, and the water temperature has meant few Mackerel, if any. Instead there has been Green Jacks, Look-Downs and Mullet. Sardinas have been available if you are one of the first boats to San Jose, and you have to beat the local boats there. These baits are being brought down from the East Cape so if you are late, all you get are dead ones good for chum.
FISHING
Billfish: The cooling water temperature has resulted in more Striped Marlin being caught, particularly on the Pacific side. Blue and Black Marlin are still being found on the Cortez side but not as many as we had a few weeks ago. I am not sure if this is a result of the water temperature of from the moon phase, but there are still some decent fish out there as one of the smaller local boats proved early in the week when the scaled a Blue Marlin at almost #500. Lures caught allmost all of the billfish this week, but a few Striped Marlin were hungry enough to eat the Green Jacks. Many of the boats found themselves catching small Bollito for the first hour of the day in order to have decent baits.
Yellowfin Tuna: There was little change in the Yellowfin report this week as there are still occasional larger fish to 150 pounds being found on the Cortez side aroung the outer Gorda Banks and the 1150 area. Elsewhere, such as the Inman Banks and south of the San Jaime Banks there have been football size Yellowfin associated with Porpoise, and an occasional fish to 40 – 100 pounds with them. Just off of the lighthouse on the Pacific side there have been very small Yellowfin, bait size fish found by the Pangas.
Dorado: Dorado were the fish of the week and the size has slowly grown over the past few weeks. Most of the fish caught this last week were in the 15-20 pound range with a few in the larger class at 35 pounds. Most boats were able to get limits of these fish if they tried hard, and most of them were found on the Pacific side of the Cape.
Wahoo: The bite on Wahoo dropped off locally, but it may be due to the fluctuation in water temperature. There were still fish being caught, but not every day as we had happen the week before. This past week the bite was about ½ of what we had just recently seen, perhaps it will pick up as the water re-adjusts.
Inshore: Inshore was a repeat of last week, with the exception of the Snapper bite, the large swells caused by Tropical Storm Georgette mads getting into the rocks difficult for most of the week. There were Roosterfish, lots of small Skip-jack tuna and baby Yellowfin Tuna as well as loads of small Dorado that supplied most of the action for the Pangas this past week. As well as the usual inshore fish, there were a few nice Black Marlin hooked by Pangas slow trolling live bait for bigger Dorado, so there was always the chance of being surprised!

Just recently it came to our attention you can now buy fishing licenses online. Some Spanish required...won't let me buy quantities, as it looks like you can only buy one at a time. I only played on the website for a few minutes this morning, look great for those yearly licenses!!!

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY:
Weather has been excellent with lots of sunshine. Fishing for Steelhead, Coho, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char using fly, spin and conventional gear has been excellent.
The Skeena River is very low and in excellent shape. Fishing for Steelhead and Coho is excellent. It is not uncommon to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day.
The Kalum River is very low and in excellent shape. Steelhead and Coho are coming in now. I have reports of some great catches.
The Kitimat River remains very low and clear. The best fishing results have been achieved during the early mornings or when the 'Tide Fish'(Coho moving on the incoming tides) are moving through the lower Kitimat River.
The Douglas Channel Coho is hit and miss during this time of the year. Most of the Coho are heading for or are already in the rivers that they will be spawning in. The Kitimat Harbour Fishery is still producing Coho and with the nice weather a few boaters trolling the harbour are being rewarded for their efforts.
Check out the Ron Wakita report below.
The Zymoetz (Copper) River is very clean. Summer-run Steelhead are moving in now and great catches are being reported.
This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Mike Herzberg, Ariel Kuppers and Wes Owen. Thank you to all of the fishing guides and anglers who sent reports and photos. It is very much appreciated!

Kitimat River
I apologize for a shortened version of this Fishing Report but I was feeling a bit under the weather.
The Kitimat River remains very low and clear. The best fishing results have been achieved during the early mornings or when the 'Tide Fish'(Coho moving on the incoming tides) are moving through the lower Kitimat River.
Sept 12 Manny Arruda submitted this photo of a 16lb 12oz. Kitimat River Coho. Wow! Nice Coho Manny. It is really close to the same size as the Coho that your sister, Maria caught. Congratulations to you both.
Sept 12 Mike Herzberg drifted with his friends Alex and Pete. They landed 2 Coho out of the 6 they hooked. They hooked their Coho on Hot Shots http://www.rapala.ca/ and on Jigs. Congratulations Alex and Pete! Well done Mike!
Sept 15 Ariel Kuppers guided our clients Bill Neighbour and Dave Thomas. They hooked into 7 Coho and landed 2. Two were hooked on Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ #35 hotshots and the rest float fishing roe with Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ floats and 2/0 Gamakatsu http://www.rapala.ca/ hooks.
Sept 15 Mike Herzberg reports' Fishing still really slow because of the low water, but we managed to get a few each drift. Anter landed a beauty on Tuesday'. Well done Anter.
Summary:
Coho stock numbers will continue to improve throughout September. The challenge will be to figure out the best times and tackle to catch them. Early mornings and evenings are usually the best times. As for tackle, spoons, hot shots http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ , jigs, spinners, float-fishing or bottom-bouncing roe are some of the most effective methods but on any given day one, none or all may work. Coho fishing in this very low, clear water is a challenge. I look forward to posting the photos of the anglers who figure it out.
DOUGLAS CHANNEL
Sept 12 Wes Owen called me at 10:00 AM saying that he was on his way in from fishing and he had his limit of 4 Coho in the cooler fishing by himself. Wes has some clients coming this week and wanted to stay dialed to where the Coho were holding in the Kitimat Harbour so he decided to go out this morning. Wes hooked 7 Coho to land the 4 Coho that he kept. Well done Wes!
We have plenty of open dates for Driftboat Trips for Coho and Saltwater Charters for Coho and Halibut. Any interested anglers please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca
Good Health and Good Fishing!
Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

September 14, 2010 One 'New' clip posted on Video Clips http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm
Commentary by Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters. I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friends Noel Gyger and Syd and Elaine Pallister for Coho on the Kitimat River September 8, 2010. Syd is one of the owners of Gibbs/Delta Tackle http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ . We hooked 4 Coho during our short morning drift but Elaine managed to land the only one. Hurray for Elaine! We had a great day on the Kitimat River. We hooked our Coho on Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Hot Shots although we tried to entice Coho with Gibbs Koho and Croc lures http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ . We watched a local angler, Randy Dean land 2 Coho with Koho lures. Randy had an interesting comment that the Gibbs lures worked best at day break. The weather turned out to be outstanding and we had a great morning of fishing. Thank You to Syd, Elaine and Noel for your wonderful company.
Note: to watch the video in the highest possible quality be sure to choose the option 480p on YouTube Go here for a direct link to this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VzHLSWHYvtA It is also listed on the Video webpage http://www.noelgyger.ca/video-clips-web.htm . Drift boater plug pulling dream come true. How does one know how much line is let out? The answer is, get one of these reels! Abu Garcia http://www.purefishing.com/ has come out with two fishing reels with line counters. One reel is for the BIG Chinook and the other smaller one for Coho and Steelhead. Secret, don’t tell anybody but to catch Coho set the centre line at 55 feet the outside left and right at 48 feet. Have fun with them. Yes, we used the smaller reel in the video.

Endless Season Update September 19, 2010
REPORT #1231 'Below the Border'
Saltwater Fly-Fishing reports since 1996
East Cape
Late summer yellowfin tuna meet their match with Cassandra one of RBV's tenacious lady anglers.
September continues to promise limits for many anglers looking for a late summer yellowfin tuna fix. Often the first tuna will be a short distance from your hotel. Admittedly they are small but a good warm up for the bruisers lurking under the porpoise schools farther offshore. Hook the right…wrong one??? And you will find yourself laying in a Jacuzzi nursing a margarita with barely enough energy left to lick the salt off the glass.
You might find the plentiful dorado more to your liking as they put on a show leaping about.
Once you have limited out there is always the billfish option which currently offers , stripers, sailfish or an occasional blue or black.
Inshore the roosterfish action remains some of the best recorded in years and the pompano or pargo are waiting to rock your world.
Current East Cape Weather http://tiny.cc/EastCapeWeather303
Magdalena Bay, Baja Mexico
Like most of Baja Sur there are very few anglers in the house. Offshore a steady parade of boats fleeing the slow California season are traveling down the coast. Local info about the many marlin and tuna twenty or so miles above San Lazaro have Captains working out their timing so they can arrive in the area at gray light.
Meanwhile, closer to shore, small yellowfin tuna and firecracker yellowtail are thick ten miles outside the Boca.
Esteros are expected to improve over the next few weeks as shrimp season goes into full swing. With few anglers it's hard to gauge how good the fishing is right now. There are reports of decent sized groupers, pargo and even a few snook.
..…Bob Hoyt
Current Magdalena Bay Weather http://tiny.cc/MagBayWeather150
Zihuatanejo, Mainland Mexico
Due to the heavy rainfall we normally experience in September, the 82° to 84° blue water has been pushed out past the 1,000 fathom line and at about the 32 mile mark.
No doubt the fishing was slow this week with few boats going out due to the lack of tourists. On a trip to the Centro Mercado today (Friday), I checked out the local catches by the commercial pangueros. There were a few yellowfin tuna, dorado, and striped marlin fillets, and not much else.
When I pulled up the Terrafin Satellite photos for the blue water (chlorophyll), it was incredible how much brown stuff was coming out of the Rio Balsas about 45 miles to the North of us, and brown water is worse than green. It is actually reaching areas we fish for sailfish and tuna from Zihuatanejo... …Ed Kunze
Current Zihuatanejo Weather http://tiny.cc/zihuatanejo582
Cabo San Lucas
Most boats releasing one billfish per day, others more. Most of the fish have been Striped Marlin, but there have been a lot of small Blue Marlin caught as well, fish between 180 to 280 pounds, and a few larger fish to 500 pounds. Many of the fish have been found on the Pacific side of the Cape with the effort being most intense for the Blue Marlin between 10 miles off the lighthouse to the ridge between the San Jaime and the Golden Gate Banks. The Golden Gate and the area off of Los Arcos have been producing most of the Striped Marlin, with more seen than caught!
Tuna action continues inconsistent, one day there are plenty, the next they are gone. Of course, if you are the one in the right place at the right time it seems there is no end to them. The problem of course, is finding them in the first place. Most of the local banks produced some with an occasional toad of over 200 pounds. They have been the exception however, most of the fish found have been between football size to school fish, between 8 and 20 pounds for the most part.
There are plenty of dorado, averaging size 10 pounds with a few in the #30 class, but they are easily found. Fly rod action on these guys was great it was catch and release until your arms dropped off, and the excitement of having one of the big ones show up in the chum line made for some great action.
Wahoo went on the bite this past week. We had one group who hooked multiple fish each day three days in a row, landing at least one a day. The largest was right around 60 pounds and they lost a larger one that day as well, the others were around 35 pounds.
Inshore action roosterfish were the exotic, plus some decent snapper, lots of small skip-jack and baby yellowfin as well as loads of small dorado that supplied most of the action for the Pangas this past week. As well as the usual inshore fish, there were a few nice black marlin hooked by Pangas fishing for larger dorado, so there was always the chance of being surprised!...…George and Mary Landrum

Sept. 13-19, 2010
Weather: Still hot, even though it is cooler on the gauge as the lack of wind and the high humidity makes it seem so much warmer. Our nighttime lows have been in the low 80's while the daytime highs have reached as high as 103 degrees. No rain, and little cloud cover, slight breezes, high humidity, welcome to my sauna!
Water: Still no Tropical Storms in our area, but we have had some slightly larger than normal swells this week. Nothing too big, but they have tossed up some surf on the south facing beaches. Water temperatures on the Cortez side of the Cape have been pretty steady at 86-87 degrees inside the 1,000 fathom line, and at the end of the week we could see the approach of a spot of very warm 90 degree water coming over the Cabrillo Seamount. On the Pacific side the warm water at 86 degrees wrapped around the Cape and came up to the outside (west) of the San Jaime Bank. Inside that area on the Pacific the water was a bit cooler at 82-83 degrees. A bit of breeze in the mornings early in the week had a small amount of chop on the water, and later in the week the winds died and the water was almost glassy all day.
Bait: Caballito and Mullet were readily available at the normal $3 per bait, and I heard that there were some Sardinas as well in San Jose.
FISHING
Billfish: Marlin seem to have made almost everyone happy this week. Almost every boat has been releasing one fish per day, some more than that. The Golden Gate and the area off of Los Arcos have been producing most of the Striped Marlin, but many more have been sighted and had bait tossed at them than have been hooked up!
Yellowfin Tuna: Still nothing consistent on the Tuna, one day there are plenty, the next they are gone. Of course, if you are the one in the right place at the right time it seems there are no end to them. The problem of course, is finding them in the first place. South of the San Jaime Ban, just to the west of the Golden Gate, 40 miles to the south of the Cape, out at the Cabrillo Seamount, the Gorda Banks and the Inman Banks have all produced fish this week, and there has been an occasional toad of over 200 pounds. They have been the exception however, most of the fish found have been between football size to school fish, between 8 and 20 pounds for the most part.
Dorado: Once again we had a good Dorado bite this week. There were plenty of fish, but they were not large ones, yet. Average size was 10 pounds with a few in the #30 class, but they were readily available. Fly rod action on these guys was great, catch and release until your arms dropped off, and the excitement of having one of the big ones show up in the chum line made for some great action. The key was bait, lots of it if using sardinas. You could catch a Dorado, keep it in the water and have the school follow for a long time. Toss in a few sardinas from time to time, or some small chunks of Bonita or skip jack and go to town. Most of the action was once again on the Pacific side within 5 miles of the beach. There were scattered larger fish offshore.
Wahoo: I don't know what happened, maybe the moon beginning to go full, but the Wahoo went on the bite this past week. We had one group who hooked multiple fish each day three days in a row, landing at least one a day. The largest was right around 60 pounds and they lost a larger one that day as well, the others were around 35 pounds. Other boats reported getting bit as well, but the main concentration seemed to be on the Pacific side about 8 miles south of the lighthouse. There were reports from the normal areas as well, the banks and along the rocky points, but the action did not seem to be as hot and heavy.
Inshore: Inshore fishing was a repeat of last weeks as there were Roosterfish, some decent Snapper, lots of small Skip-jack tuna and baby Yellowfin Tuna as well as loads of small Dorado that supplied most of the action for the Pangas this past week. As well as the usual inshore fish, there were a few nice Black Marlin hooked by Pangas slow trolling live bait for bigger Dorado, so there was always the chance of being surprised!
Notes: Recently the Mexican government placed restrictions on the amount of U.S. Dollars individuals and businesses may deposit in a bank account. Due to this restriction, many stores, such as Cost-Co, will no longer accept more than $100 U.S., and you must spend at least 80% in the store. No more going in and buying a case of beer with a big bill and getting a good exchange rate! Now you really need to pay attention about the fishing licenses. Due to Mexican government restrictions the license guys will no longer accept U.S. Dollars, you must pay in pesos at the dock, and no, they do not usually have small change! The cost for a daily license is $140 pesos, a weekly is $290 pesos. If you book an all-inclusive charter, like us, your licenses waiting for you at the dock, they do the work, you just have to supply the names for the licenses in advance.
Just recently it came to our attention you can now buy fishing licenses online. Some Spanish required...won't let me buy quantities, as it looks like you can only buy one at a time. I only played on the website for a few minutes this morning, look great for those yearly licenses!!!

My great thanks to the guys from Jersey and Virginia, Ed, Gene, Herman and Kent for the new music! They were nice enough to bring me a nice assortment of new CD's. Today's report was written to the music off of the CD “Vintage Bluegrass Essentials”, a 2009 Rural Rhythm Records release.

September 5 to September 12, 2010
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Normal fall weather is upon us. The little rain we received did no harm to the rivers. Fishing for Steelhead, Coho, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char using fly, spin and conventional gear has been excellent.
Skeena River is in excellent shape. Fishing for Steelhead and Coho is excellent. It is not uncommon to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day and throw in the odd Chum and Pink.
Kalum River is in very good shape. Steelhead and Coho are coming in now Kitimat River Coho season is in full swing with lots of Coho caught last weekend during the Chamber of Commerce Derby and more Coho moving into the river during the big tides this week. Check out the latest video I did for Coho on the Kitimat River.
Douglas Channel is yielding good but not exceptional catches of Coho. The Kitimat Harbour fishery this season has been at best erratic this week. Check out the detailed Ron Wakita report below.
Zymoetz (Copper) River is very clean. Summer-run Steelhead are moving in now and great catches are being reported.

Kitimat River Coho Season on the Kitimat River is in full swing with lots of Coho caught last weekend during the Chamber of Commerce Derby and more Coho moving into the Kitimat during the big tides this week.
The middle and upper Kitimat River runs are holding really good numbers of Coho. The challenge early in the week was to hook them with the low water conditions. Many anglers are having the best success by going early in the morning just as it shades to daylight.
Sept 5 Mike Herzberg fishing with his very good friends and long time fishing partners, Anter and Pete hooked over 25 Coho on their drift of the Kitimat River. Wow! Well done guys! They only kept 4 Coho but Mike reports hooking Coho in every hole except the Haisla Bridge pool. Congratulations Guys!
Sept 5 I had the wonderful experience of drifting with my son Corey and my daughter Michelle on Derby Sunday. My good
friend Ron Jones drifted in my other driftboat with my other son, Brandon. We had a great day of fishing and had a lot of fun. We hooked 10 Coho but only landed 4. As I explained to my kids, 'On other days we could have just as easily landed 10 for 10 but we should enjoy the results as they happen and have fun with them'. I know I will always cherish these moments whether we land the fish or not!
Sept 6 Mike Holland and Associate Guide for Reliable Guide and Charters drifted with his long time friends, Daren and George Loren. Mike reports keeping their limit of 6 Coho but hooked and released a bunch more. Well done Guys. Congratulations!
Sept 6 Jesse Houston did a short drift with his cousin, Dustin Edwardsen and their friends. They landed this beauty and lost
another. Well done Dustin. Congratulations!
Sept 7 I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friends Mike Herzberg and Noel Gyger. Mike invited Noel and I on adrift in his Clackacraft driftboat which looks as immaculate as the day he bought it. We hooked 7 Coho and landed 3 using Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Hot Shots. We had an awesome time ribbing each other about the fish lost but Noelwould boost our spiritswith his special toast. We would then critique, correct or adjust for the next fish. Mike and I were born and raised fishing the Kitimat River and Noel is a legend in the Fishing Industry. We have all learned that fishing is as much about enjoying the experience with good friends as it is about catching the fish. Thank You to Mike and Noel for a wonderful drift on the Kitimat River! It is always special for me to share our mutual passion for fishing with you both. BTW Noel shot a nice video clip from this day. Check it out.
Sept 8 Mike Herzberg drifted with his friend Tony and his former baby sitter, Maria. Tony and Maria landed 4 Coho on their drift with Mike. It's ironic that Maria helped nurture Mike into adolescence and Mike was able to help nurture Maria into becoming an angler. Congratulations to Maria and Tony! Well done Mike.
Sept 8 I had the pleasure of fishing with my very good friends Noel Gyger and Syd and Elaine Pallister. Syd is one of the owners of Gibbs/Delta http://gibbsfishing.com/ Tackle. We hooked 4 Coho during our morning drift but Elaine managed to land the only one. Hurray for Elaine! We had a great day on the Kitimat River. We hooked our Coho on Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Hot Shots although we tried to entice Coho with Gibbs http://gibbsfishing.com/ Koho and Crocs lures. We watched a local angler, Randy Dean, land 2 Coho with Koho lures. Randy had an interesting comment that the Gibbs lures worked the best at daybreak. The weather turned out to be outstanding and we had a great morning of fishing on the Kitimat River. Thank You to Syd, Elaine and Noel for your wonderful company.
Sept 8 Jim and Manny Arruda drifted by us with their catch which they proudly held up for a photo. Jim and Manny commented that they worked extra hard to land these Coho because family pride would not allow them to be out-fished by their sister Maria who was fishing with Mike Herzberg ahead of them and had already landed their 4 Coho. Congratulations to the Arruda family!
Sept 8 Ariel Kuppers drifted with our clients James Elgerd and his son Hayden and their friend Duncan Elgerd. They landed 3 Coho Float Fishing Roe with Gibbs http://gibbsfishing.com/ Floats. Hayden landed the first Coho of the day using a Pink Jig made by Jim's Jigs. Congratulations on your catch and Thank You for using our services. Well done Ariel!
Sept 9 Mike Herzberg drifted with our clients Rudi and Uli. Rudi and Uli hooked and landed 3 Coho on their drift. 3 for 3! Well done guys. Congratulations on your catch and Thank You for using our Guiding Services.
SUMMARY: Coho fishing on the Kitimat River was good this week and will continue throughout September into October and will be even better fishing if we receive a little rain. The problem is that we have to be careful what we wish for. We may receive too much rain then the river could get high and dirty. The forecast is for light rain which is exactly what is needed to create ideal Coho fishing conditions.
Congratulations to all the winners in the Chamber of Commerce Derby. I think everyone that participated were winners because there was a definite buzz in the air during the Awards Ceremonies. A huge Thank You to all the volunteers who made this event a success especially Trish Parsens, Rosemary and the Chamber of Commerce staff.
Douglas Channel
Sept 7 Ron Jones fishing with Ferd Bouzane, Jason Ringham and Graham Brady boated 7 Coho at Fish Trap.
Ron said he had a great time harassing Jason and that catching the Coho was a bonus. Well done guys and
Congratulations on your catch.
Sept 8 Ron Jones fishing with Jason Ringham boated 5 Coho in less than one hour. The bite started at 5:00 pm and ended shortly after 6:00 pm. Sorry no photos.
Sept 9 Wes Owen fishing with his clients Tim and Carl boated 5 Coho of the 9 they hooked. Wes was using Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Abe and Al Flasher #1 Prism with a Rhys Davis Anchovy teaser. Congratulations to Tim and Carl. Well done Skipper!
Sept 9 Mal the 'Signman' reports fishing with his friend, Barb and her husband Tom on a fishing trip down the Douglas Channel. They landed 8 Halibut, keeping their legal limit of 6 and 20 Coho. Worthy to note, one Halibut weighed 120lbs and two others weighed 100 and 50lb. Mal also commented that they had an excellent trip on the Douglas Channel and Bob and Mal were spoiled by Barb's excellent cooking. Mal paid me to say, 'They caught all the Coho because he has mastered the art of Coho fishing”. He also added to the pile of self indulgence by saying that, 'he is a superb Halibut Fisher and that under his excellent tutelage Barb and Tom were able to land their Halibut.' Although Mal is not very bashful about his fishing ability, the proof is in the picture and the catch is very impressive. Congratulations to Barb and Tom. Well done Mal!
SUMMARY: The Douglas Channel is yielding good but not exceptional catches of Coho. The Kitimat Harbor fishery this season has been at best erratic this week. Boaters who were in the right place at the right time had pretty good results where others were not as fortunate. Such is life in the fishing world. Halibut fishing should continue to be good but boaters will have to monitor the weather.
We have plenty of open dates for Drift Boat Trips for Coho and Saltwater Charters for Coho and Halibut. Any interested anglers please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca
Good Health and Good Fishing!
Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

Hi Noel, so far September has been fantastic fishing for Coho at Holiday Island at the north end of Dundas Island. I was also surprised to see a 35lb. Chinook Salmon take my Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/n Flash Fly 4” Glo Ghost. Pictures will follow in next weeks report. September is also probably the best month to view Humpback Whales in the Chatham Sound Area.

Andrew Rushton: Kalum River Lodge
Hi Noel, great day on the Skeena today. 4 guys hooked 20 Steelhead. Steve Rothcop was into 8 good fish, only his third day ever fly fishing. Also caught, Coho and Steelhead on the Kalum.

Marvin Reid: Meziadin and Northern BC
Well another season is coming to an end, but what a great season it has been. This will be my last report for this year, as it is now time to focus on some moose hunting. Meziadin Lake Provincial Park will be closing a few days earlier than I previously had reported. The gate will now be locked as of Monday Sept 20th.
There are still a few days left to enjoy some great Dolly Varden, as well as Coho fishing. Just a reminder that all Coho must be released.
Gary Cress and his wife Betty have been visiting from north east BC. They have been having a great time catching and releasing Coho as well as Dolly’s. That is Gary in the picture with one of the Coho he landed. This is their third visit to the Park this summer, and it has been wonderful having them here.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank Noel for allowing me to post my report on his site, as well as Ron Wakita for his help over the past summer. Thanks to you both.
To all of those that came to Meziadin this past summer, thanks to you all, and hopefully we can meet again in 2011. Marvin Reid
I am now the operator of Meziadin Lake Provincial Park, as well as operating the Park which has a Store, and wireless internet to all sites. We also offer Travel Trailer Rentals to persons wishing to enjoy the outdoor experience.
I do guided fishing trips on Meziadin and other local lakes along Highway 37.
Meziadin if not the best lake in Northwest BC for Dolly Varden and Bull Trout, up to 11 lbs, must be very close to the top of the list. I supply all rods, tackle and bait. Care of catch and cleaning.
Trips can be booked by the hour or by the day. Contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca I use a 19ft Harbercraft powered by a 75 Yamaha.
Best regards, Marvin Reid

Getting No Respect
Just like Rodney Dangerfield who is 'Getting No Respect' that phrase sometimes applies to fellow anglers, landowners, and the fish and game we come in contact with. Let me give you a few examples.
During the Sockeye run on the Skeena the various, more popular bars can get fairly crowded. There is no way around it, that is the way it is. My fishing buddy Herb and I were alone on this bar, which was great, but of course, too good to last. Soon another jet boat came in and Herb moved down as they all took up fishing positions. Now ethics say that you should never walk in below another angler. Fair enough. However, when another boat pulled up it pushed Herb further down the bar until he had to wade way out to get the proper drift, but the upstream anglers drift was swinging right into Herb's legs on each cast, preventing him from fishing effectively. Rather than set up a confrontation we decided to just leave. Some of these anglers were inconsiderate and showed no respect.
On another occasion, again during the hectic Sockeye run I had walked into a popular hole upstream from Terrace. The pool can hold four anglers comfortably. A guy and his wife occupied the centre positions. The two guys on either end could not fish properly because the husband and wife would keep either moving out or letting their flies drift in cutting the drift of the two other anglers. I watched them do this on every cast and it irked me. Finally, the outside anglers gave up, packed up and left. I moved in upstream, and with the first cast the guy moved out into deeper water to cut my drift. With the second cast he moved out further. I politely told him that I had watched him do that to the other anglers, but if he planned on doing that to me he may have an accidental tear in his waders. Just then another angler showed up and said to the husband and wife team 'Oh, you're still here'. I asked the new angler what he meant. He told me that they have been there since 5:30AM. It was now 6:30 PM. These two had hogged this pool for the last 13 hours. I suggested that perhaps his meter had run out on this pool. If he had fished and respected other anglers then no problem but for those 13 hours he considered that pool on the river his and hers alone.
Another time I watched an angler who obviously knew how to fish the Ferry Island riffle. The Sockeye were in but when he hooked a Pink he would skid them onto the rocks and then kick them back into the water. Several fellow anglers criticized his fish handling techniques, but it had no effect on him. He continued to treat those willing little Pinks with disdain. Some of the other anglers even suggested dragging him over the rocks, or kicking him up to the parking lot, but luckily another angler had phoned the Conservation Office, and a plainclothes CO arrived and awarded him a fine for his treatment of those fish. No respect for the fish.
In another episode last year an angler had hooked an absolute monster, trophy of a lifetime, Steelhead. Of course, you would want some pictures. Well on the internet he had posted 61 or 62 pictures of that fish. When a fish is supposed to be out of the water for only a few seconds, what do you think that fish's chances of recovery were? The last pictures showed the fish on its side looking quite lifeless. What a shame to destroy that gene pool. Again, no respect for the fish.
We were fishing the Upper Skeena one fall hooking some Sockeye, Pink and the occasional Steelhead. We were on Native land when we heard an ATV approaching. They came down to the hole we were fishing. I asked them if they wanted to fish this run since it was on their land close to the reserve. They replied 'No, that's OK, we are just looking for some dollies in the pool at the end of the bar. It looked like a grandfather, father, and about a 10-12 year old grandson. They didn't have any luck with their spin gear and were packing up. We had continued to hook some fish. I had a fish on and asked the youngster if he had ever landed a fish on a fly rod. He shyly replied 'No'.
I gave the rod to him and instructed him how to play a fish on a fly reel. After he landed the fish I showed him how to cast, and we caught another Pink which he again landed. He was very shy and didn't say anything but as they left the grandfather and father came over to me and said that he had enjoyed it very much, and to come back anytime. Respect for the landowner can often open doors, plus it is just plain fun to watch someone experience a new thrill.
Have a great and safe weekend. Respect others and handle those fish with care.
Prince Rupert Still great Coho fishing around Rupert with lots of fish in Hecate Strait. Good Halibut, Yelloweye Rockfish and Ling Cod.
Kispiox River Water level is better than it has been for weeks. Lots of fish to be had, but there are also lots of anglers on the banks. Coho and Steelheading has been pretty good. Lots of fish in the lower river, but are working their way up.
Bulkley River Fishing has been productive for both Coho and Steelhead. There are still some Pinks in the river, but they will be spawned out very soon. Don’t forget that as of September 1st you must have your Steelhead Stamp and your Classified Waters stamp on your license; Regardless whether you are fishing for Steelhead or not.
Morice River Steelhead run has been good and the Coho has been fair. Lots of fish being caught throughout.

Steelhead run this year is:
Just glancing over the Tyee Index for Steelhead as of August 12th, and must say the numbers look encouraging. The 1998-2002 seasons were the glory years, and those of you fishing then probably have many fond memories of that period. The numbers this year show the closest to those wonderful times over the last ten years.
Of course, a lot of things can happen, and often do when it comes to fishing. But by nature anglers are more glass half full than glass half empty people and time on the river is really never wasted. As Roderick Haig-Brown so wisely said 'If fishing is just an excuse to be close to rivers, I'm glad I thought of it.' So, if the numbers look good, we think it is going to be good, and we always go out there optimistically – info courtesy Bob Melrose

CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT
Capt. George Landrum
Fly Hooker Sportfishing
www.flyhooker.com
gmlandrum@hotmail.com
Sept. 6-12, 2010
Weather: It started to cool a little this week. We still had hot weather but our lows went to the low 80's instead of the mid 80's and the highs dropped a few degrees as well. We had partly cloudy skies most of the week and that had something to do with it, of course.
Water: We had no tropical storms pass us this week so the swells were not as large as last week. That said, there was some wind every day in the afternoon that kicked up some chop. Mostly later in the week, and it came from the southwest for the most part, but it was there and made the trip home if you fished the Cortez side a bit uncomfortable. In the very early morning there was a bit of wind on the Pacific side almost every day, but it went away fairly quickly. The water on the Cortez side of the Cape seemed to stay right around 84-85 degrees in our area, and up to 88 degrees in the east cape area. On the Pacific side we had a cold water upwelling from the lighthouse, out to the San Jaime Bank and to the shore just inside the Golden Gate Bank. Cold water is relative of course and this was 74-75 degrees. It was cold compared to the surrounding water which remained in the 80-81 degree range.
Bait: Caballito and Mullet were readily available at the normal $3 per bait, and I heard that there were some Sardinas as well in San Jose.
FISHING
Billfish: Not quite as hot as it was last week, there are still plenty of Billfish to be found. Striped Marlin have made a showing on the Pacific side around the Golden Gate Bank, and the San Jaime Bank as well as the 95 spot and the 1150 have been producing a few Blue Marlin every day. The Gorda Banks, as usual, are providing anglers with some action on Black Marlin, and these fish are also being found at the high spots as well as off of the points. Most of the action on both Black and Striped Marlin has been on live bait, and while the Blues seem to go after lures better than live bait, that may just be because more boats pull plastic for them.
Yellowfin Tuna: On again off again is the story on Tuna this past week. If you were in the right place at just the right time it was very good fishing on fish to 35 pounds with an occasional bruiser to 200 pounds. But if you did not have the luck all you ended up with was a long boat ride. Mostly it was the first boats on the fish that had good luck, and at the normal Tuna spots, south of the San Jaime, 30 miles south of the Cape, outside the 1150, the Cabrillo Seamount and the Gorda Banks. The bigger fish seemed to come on the live bait dropped back after the first hook-up, with a few on lures. Those that were late to the party might have managed to get a few football fish into the boat, but the key was to be first on the scene.
Dorado: We still had a good Dorado bite, but not as good as the week before. Most boats were able to get at least one nice fish in the box, and the good guys were letting the small fish, under 8 pounds, go back to grow up. The bad guys were killing everything they caught, and some of them came in with way over the legal limit of the small fish. Most of the action took place on the Pacific side of the Cape, with almost all of the small fish being found close to shore and the larger fish at least 5 miles out.
Wahoo: Once again I did not hear of any Wahoo bite going on, but did hear of a few scattered fish being caught.
Inshore: Roosterfish, some decent Snapper, lots of small Skip-jack tuna and baby Yellowfin Tuna and loads of small Dorado supplied most of the action for the Pangas this past week. As well as the usual inshore fish, there were a few nice Black Marlin hooked by Pangas slow trolling live bait for bigger Dorado, so there was always the chance of being surprised!
Notes: While not as hot as last week, the fishing has remained very good, and we are hoping it continues. Our fingers remain crossed about the weather, this is normally the time of year when storms start up to the south of us, but looking at the weather pictures this morning I see nothing forming up. So..., until next week, tight lines!
Just came to our attention you can now buy fishing licenses online. Some Spanish required...won't let me buy quantities, as it looks like you can only buy one at a time. I only played on the website for a mew minutes this morning, look great for those yearly licenses!!! Thanks David for the website

Weekly Fishing Reports (Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat, Prince Rupert and Meziadin North)
Noel Gyger
August 29 to September 5, 2010
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: We had quite a bit of rain this week. The rain is just what we needed to keep the Salmon moving and bring in more Steelhead. Fishing for Sockeye, Chum, Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char using fly, spin and conventional gear has been fair.
The Skeena River was on the rise by mid week and is now borderline fishable. Sockeye fishing is fair if you know the how and where to fish for them. Some big ones are coming in now. Steelhead and Coho fishing is only fair due to the coloured water. It is not uncommon to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day and throw in the odd Chum and Pink.
The Kalum River is a little coloured up from the rain. The upper end is clean. Steelhead and Coho are coming in now. The Kitimat River catch results were all over the spectrum this week with the dramatically changing water levels.
The Douglas Channel Coho fishing has been a bit erratic. Most boats are catching Coho but not in the numbers we were all expecting. Check out the detailed Ron Wakita report below.
The Zymoetz (Copper) River is really dirty. Summer-run Steelhead are moving in now. Prince Rupert
has some excellent Coho fishing all around Rupert area and lots of Coho in Hecate Strait waiting to come in. Monster Halibut are being caught. Good time to be close to the ocean.
Meziadin has a fresh run of Sockeye as well as some nice Dollies and a few Rainbows. Check out the full report from Marvin Reid below.
Bulkley River; some rain has caused the Telkwa to be a bit coloured, but the Bulkley hasn’t been affected too much by it. Above Telkwa is crystal clear, and below has a touch of colour. Lots of Pinks being caught. Coho fishing has been a bit tough while Steelheading has been prosperous.
Kispiox River; some rain has bumped up the river but water is fishable. Steelhead run has been pretty good so far, Coho has been tough.
The Morice River access is now allowed “at your own risk”. Fires are still burning/smouldering in the area so be careful. Fishing has done well. Lots of fish in the river.
The Babine River is really low. Fishing has done well for most.
Check out the Bob Melrose report below. This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Wes Owen, Gill McKean, Jeff Carlson, Tracey Hittel, Andrew Rushton, Marvin Reid and Mike Herzberg. Thank you to all of the fishing guides and anglers who sent reports and photos. It is very much appreciated!
WARNING: BEARS on all our rivers. Be Bear Aware and carry Pepper Spray. Check your spray for expiry date!

River Reports Weather - Normal temp - Sunrise & Sunset - Tyee Test Fishery – Tides – Hydrometric Data
Bulkley River
Some rain has caused the Telkwa to be a bit coloured, but the Bulkley hasn’t been affected too much by it. Above Telkwa is crystal clear, and below has a touch of colour. Lots of Pinks being caught. Coho fishing has been a bit tough while Steelheading has been prosperous.
Kalum River
The river is coloured on the lower end. I have had reports of Steelhead and Coho being caught. The run should build over the next couple of weeks as the fall run Steelhead is due.
Kispiox River
Some rain has bumped up the river but water is fishable. Steelhead run has been pretty good so far, Coho has been tough
.
Morice River
Access is now allowed “at your own risk”. Fires are still burning/smoldering in the area so be careful. Fishing has done well. Lots of fish in the river.
Skeena River
The Skeena River is coloured up from the rain and is borderline fishable. The larger Sockeye are showing up now. Limit is lowered to 1 per day, 2 in possession on August 23rd. Steelhead and Coho fishing is fair. It is not uncommon to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day and throw in the odd Chum and Pink. This “is” the time to be out fishing on the Skeena.
Zymoetz (Copper) River
The water is very dirty and not fishable.
Meziadin River and Lake
Meziadin has a fresh run of Sockeye being caught as well as some nice Dollies and a few Rainbows. Creek levels have risen significantly over the past 72 hours, allowing more access to spawning Salmon. Coho are now arriving in the lake. All Coho must be released.
Kasiks River
Coho are coming into the river now. There has been a bump in the water due to some local rain and the fish are moving up river. Fish the deep darker pools where they may be holding. Don’t fish unless you see them rolling.
Exchamsiks River
Coho are coming into the river now. There has been a bump in the water due to some local rain and the fish are moving up river. Fish the deep darker pools where they may be holding.
Bell Irving River
Should start producing some excellent Steelhead fishing over the next couple of months.
Bear River
In Stewart, BC should have some Coho entering that system soon.
Babine River
Is really low. Fishing has done well for most.

Kitimat River The Kitimat River Coho catch results were all over the spectrum this week with the dramatically changing water levels. We had exceptionally low water followed by exceptionally high water. Such is the case while fishing the Northwest for Coho especially on the Kitimat River. When the river level rises the Coho move in and move up the Kitimat River. The trick is to find them when the river is rising and where they are holding when the river drops. Anglers who find the Coho usually do very well. Anglers who do not find the Coho are definitely not as happy as the anglers who did. I usually like to hang out with the happy anglers.
Aug 29 I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friend Jerry, his brother Blaine and Blaine's son Cassidy. Jerry drifted in a friend's 'Foldaboat' and Blaine and Cassidy drifted with me in my Alumaweld Driftboat. Jerry lost 2 Coho on our drift and Blaine, Cassidy and I landed 2 Coho of the 7 we hooked. We landed the last 2. There is a lot to be said for being positive, persistent and above all, attentive. It is also a good quality to laugh in the face of adversity. A lot of times while fishing, things just don't go the way that they are supposed to. There are enviably mishaps and our drift was no exception. I will spare my fishing partners and myself the embarrassing details except to say that 'Everything turned out GREAT!'
Aug 30 Doug Six fishing the Rail Way Run (a mile up from Haisla River bridge) with his son Cameron and his friend Bob Zang and Bob's son Ted took these photos of this Kermode bear. Doug was very kind to provide these photos for this Fishing Report. This is a very rare occurrence. I was born and raised in Kitimat and this is the first time I have heard and now seen a Kermode Bear on the Kitimat River. The Kermode Bear is referred to as the 'Spirit Bear' and I have heard that it brings Good Luck when you see these bears. This is truly a remarkable site. Thank You to Doug for sharing his photos with the readers of this Fishing Report. I hope your sighting brings you all Good Luck!
Aug 30 I had the pleasure of drifting with my very good friend Jerry Dennill and my daughter Julie. We hooked 6 Coho but only landed one. The first one! We hooked and landed the first Coho on our first pass with Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ Hot Shots so Julie and Jerry thought we were going to have an awesome morning of Coho fishing. We then lost the next 5 Coho that we hooked. Losing Coho is sometimes a reality when fishing for Coho and it provides excellent material to harass your friend and daughter. All things considered I still think it was an awesome morning of Coho fishing.
Sept 3 I drifted with our clients Dave Futcher and his son Chris on a morning drift on the Kitimat River. We landed 4 Coho on our drift including one caught by Chris that I estimated in 17 or 18lbs. Chris' father hooked more Coho but the son definitely landed the Biggest one. Both father and son were pretty proud of the catch on the Kitimat River. Congratulations to you both! Thank You for using our services and I hope to see you again in Chinook season as we discussed.
Sept 3 Jr. Bergen drifted with his friends (sorry I didn't catch their names) and they landed 3 Coho on their drift and lost a bunch more. Congratulations Guys! The Kitimat River rose all morning and by noon the Kitimat River was barely fishable.
Sept 3 James Wright and his
friend drifted in their pontoon boats and they landed 4 Coho using Purple with Red Jigs. James is a very gifted and sharing angler and he shared with us a few helpful hints. Congratulations! Thank You for the helpful tips.
Douglas Channel
Sept 1 Peter Lamb submitted these photos, 'Here are the pictures you requested of our fishing trip. We are a crew of family and friends that comes out every second year minimum to Kitimat to fish. We caught the 10 Coho and 2 spring on Tuesday, and the 7 coho on Friday of last week. Here are the names of everyone: Shaun and Sarah Lamb, Peter Lamb Jr and Rachel Lamb, Erwin and Ruth Zotzman, Peter Lamb Sr, Bob Molyneaux”. Wow! Congratulations to you and your group! Your 22lb Chinook and Peter Jr`s 22lb Coho are very impressive. Judging by the smiles in the photos everyone had fun fishing the Douglas Channel. I especially like the photo of Shaun and his “Big One”. You don’t have to catch the big one to have fun. His smile says it all! Thank You so much for sharing your photos and info.
Sept 2 Wes Owen of Golden Fishing Adventures fishing with his clients Ken Crego and his son and daughter landed 5 Coho in the Kitimat Harbour. Wes commented that all the Coho were landed by Ken's kids. I am sure there are some special family moments created on their trip with Wes. Congratulations! Well done Skipper!
Aug 27 Ferd Bouzane and Ron Jones submitted these photos of their catch of Bottomfish down the Douglas Channel. They caught a 25lb, a 50lb and an 80lb Halibut during their trip. They also caught a variety of Bottomfish including a 50lb Ling Cod. Congratulations to Ron and Ferd on a very impressive catch. Thank You for sharing the photos.
SUMMARY: Coho fishing in the Douglas Channel has been a bit erratic. Most boats are catching Coho but not in the catch numbers we were all expecting. Whether the run is late or Coho are running the rivers inspired by the high river levels, the Coho catch results were lower this week.
One boat I spoke to had 10 Coho and 2 Chinook in Sue Channel. They landed 12 Salmon which is a pretty good catch but in previous years catch numbers have been higher. Although the catch numbers are not as good as we have become accustomed to we should all be Thankful for the blessings in the cooler that we do receive.
Halibut and Bottom fishing will continue to be productive but weather will become more of a factor into our Fall season.
Here's hoping for good weather.
We still have plenty of open dates for Drift boat trips, Saltwater Charters and Jet boat trips. Anyone interested in booking a trip with us please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca.
The Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Fishing Derby will conclude on September 5th. This Fishing Report will have fishing info provided up to Sept 3rd. Readers who are interested in the Derby results please visit our website on Monday Sept 6th.
The Derby results will be posted on our website www.kitimatfishingguideandcharters.com 'Fishing Reports'.
Good Health and Good Fishing!
Sincerely and Cheers Ron Wakita

Tracey Hittel: Kitimat Lodge
September 1st Fishing Report Kitimat Region BC Canada
Halibut, Salmon, Crab and Steelhead. The past few weeks have kept us very busy and time to write a report has been non-existent. So with a few days off before the Irish flood the lodge with laughter, cheers, Lepricons and tight lines we are getting boats ready to go. We operate with 5 driftboats, 2 rafts, and 5 jetboats accommodating 24 anglers per week.
Our tours these days have kept us on the Saltwater targeting Coho and Halibut. The “Cornsnake Crew”, these boys landed some nice Halibut and limited out in less than a couple hours. Experiencing the pull of a Halibut is something to try and the experience of pulling up Dungeness Crab traps for the evening feast is a nice touch to the day. The guys also spent a day on the Nass and landed many big Chinook and Wade said after his 5th Chinook, this is something you see in National Geographic! Need I say anything else.
Also attached are Jani and Hetsel, the boys first trip to Canada and they wanted a fishing experience that brought them into small streams fishing for Salmon. Spending their entire lives on the motherland of Finland these guys were good fishermen and target Pike as a fish back home. We took the fellas into the sea and navigated rock gardens and sandbars into small Coho rivers with the waterfalls and rock cliffs as a back and foreground. See the entire trip photos in our Salmon gallery. Jani laughed as he hooked into his 3rd Coho in 15 minutes, this is the best place I have ever fished, I thought to myself, yes, me too!
Another group of guests arrived from Japan and these fellas wanted to Target Steelhead on the Skeena, and with the run at record levels the guys fought some large Steel as well many Coho, Sockeye and Pinks. Not to mention attached a sizeable Nass Chinook with big smiles.
I had to add this pic of Leroux Craven, this young fella is holding a fresh Skeena Coho and what makes this trip so cool for me is that this guy is on a world tour of fishing, canoeing, exploring and off on an amazing adventure around the globe. Hope all is well when you read this, bud.
Another great part of my job is meeting the clients from around the world and Bish and Adelle are just another pair of Florida Keys locals, not to mention a fishing guide himself. Having a Gin Martini, with a hand stuffed, white cheddar cheese olive in the glass is an amazing taste after a hot day on the water. Attached are Bish and Guide Bark with a Skeena Steelhead.
With the fall season about to begin the trees are turning and the Steelhead are migrating into the tributaries of the Skeena. Flyfishing for monster Steelhead begins and so we will be on the hunt for the next few months in search of the number one freshwater game fish, fish on!

Marvin Reid: Meziadin and Northern BC
Last week I reported that fishing in Meziadin had slowed down somewhat. I should have waited 15 minutes. Soon after I filed my report, the bite was on again. Fresh sockeye were being caught as well as some nice dollies and a few rainbows. Ken Hewson and his wife Roxi, were visitors to Meziadin Lake Provincial Park. Roxi did very well, and said she had a great time catching fish. Ken, well, I guess he got to drive the boat and take notes for next time. It was great having them both here.
I had the pleasure of fishing with Hans Steidle and his 3 sons. Hans and his family are from Germany, and this was the first time the boys had caught fish in Canada. A great time was had by all.
Creek levels have risen significantly over the past 72 hours, allowing more access to spawning salmon. Coho are now arriving in the lake. All coho must be released.
Trips can be booked noel@noelgyger.ca by the hour or by the day. I use a 19ft Harbercraft powered by a 75 Yamaha.
Best regards, Marvin Reid

September Seduction
There is a magic in September. A promise of things to come, not really rivaled by any other month. During the spring and summer we know the days will get longer, the weather will get hotter, the bugs will get more annoying, there will be more people, and it is time to get a Chinook in the freezer. However, in September there is a feeling in the air. True, we still have fish to outwit, the remains of the Pink run are present, the Coho run is just starting, most of the Sockeye are coloured up, but those are fish for the table.
So why is September so seductive to so many anglers? Well, it is their passion for Steelhead. The other salmon species spawn and die, Steelhead may spawn and head back out to the ocean up to 3 times, to return bigger and stronger for each trip. And why do we spend so much time and/or money pursuing a fish that we have to release? That question is easily answered by any angler who has ever been embraced by the Steelhead God.
My first Steelhead on the Thompson 44 years ago stirred those feelings and the love has never diminished, in fact, it burns even brighter. I have seen many anglers smitten by this beauty and many return year after year to chase her. A summer guiding on the Dean River and her beautiful summer runs, saw many first timers go completely head over heels in love with Steelhead and Steelhead Country. For many years later both fishing and selling tackle I have seen the effect Steelhead have had on her suitors.
It's hard to explain, there are so many parts to the Steelhead puzzle. Maybe it is just being close to the river, the pull of the current, the reading of the water, or just trying to keep the waders above the waterline. Perhaps it is the scenery, the bears, eagles, kingfishers, mergansers, the mountains or changing weather. Possibly, the memories of a previous trip where you saw/hooked/lost or had seen another angler hookup in that very pool or run. It is hard to pin down what Steelheading is all about but we don't want to over analyze we just want to do it.
In September we know that more and more Steelhead will show up every day. We know that there will be those incredible 'Indian Summer' days, there will be no bugs, nights will be cool, rain will come down, and the colours of fall will take your breath away. We will see fish. Lose fish, land a few, take some spills, tie some 'wind knots', and meet new friends. Above all this there is a constant level of high expectation.
It is present in all the fishing season but heightened in September. Early and heavy rains may blow some rivers, although there will always be places to fish, they may just be more crowded. An early and heavy snow can really put a dent in the season.
So, the best time to go Steelheading is whenever you can. The best day is today. It looks like a great run coming in.
Prince Rupert Excellent Coho fishing all around Rupert and lots of Coho in Hecate Strait waiting to come in. Big Coho and Monster Halibut. Good time to be close to the ocean.
Kispiox River Some rain has bumped up the river but water is fishable. Steelhead run has been pretty good so far, Coho has been tough.
Bulkley River Some rain has caused the Telkwa to be a bit coloured, but the Bulkley hasn’t been effected to much by it. Above Telkwa is crystal clear, and below has a touch of colour. Lots of Pinks being caught. Coho fishing has been a bit tough while Steelheading has been prosperous.
Morice River Access is now allowed “at your own risk”. Fires are still burning/smoldering in the area so be careful. Fishing has done well. Lots of fish in the river.
Babine River Water is really low. Fishing has done well for most.
Enjoy your Holiday weekend, stay safe, watch out for bears, and be careful with fires.
Some rain expected in Terrace and Smithers area for the weekend but it isn't forecast to be heavy.
Bob Melrose

Jet Boaters be safe
A good set of oars and oar locks is not just for drift-boaters. The smartest thing you can do is install a good set of oars and oar locks in your jet-boat and learn how to use them. If your engine quits just snap in your oars and turn your jet boat into a drift boat and either row to shore or float to the boat launch. I have had to do this a few times myself when I was guiding. I’ve seen too many jet boats and all they have is puny paddles. One person with one paddle is useless and even two persons with two paddles is difficult to control a large or even a small jet boat. Throw those paddles away and get yourself a good set of oars and oar locks. Do it now! It may save your life. Drifting out of control into a log jam or boulders is no fun. Contact me anytime noel@noelgyger.ca and I will be happy to give you tips on how to row your jet boat.

I have a client who is interested in property of 5-10 acres or larger on the Skeena River or one of the tribs, not too far out from Terrace BC. He wants to be able to walk down to the river with his Spey rod and fish, so Skeena 4 would be ideal, but no farther than USK. CABO SAN LUCAS FISH REPORT
Capt. George Landrum
Fly Hooker Sportfishing
www.flyhooker.com
gmlandrum@hotmail.com
August 30-Sept. 5, 2010
Weather: It was a hot, muggy, mostly cloudy week for us as a layer of clouds moved over from the mainland. There has been a number of areas of circulation starting out to the south and fortunately none of them have developed enough to give us any problems but we are getting the cloud cover from them. Our daytime highs averaged in the low 90's while the nighttime lows were in the mid 80's with humidity sometimes as high as 90%.
Water: This week was a repeat of last week as we had tropical depression 10W pass to the west giving us large swells. These caused the Port Captain, the most careful one we have had yet, wait to open the port until it was light enough to see the conditions outside. The swells were large but there was almost no wind on them so conditions were very good. Water temperatures on the Pacific side of the Cape ranged from 81 degrees to 83 degrees and on the Sea of Cortez side they ranged from 84 to 85 degrees. We did see some high temperatures, to 89 degrees, up offshore of the East Cape region.
Bait: Caballito and Mullet at the normal $3 per bait, unless the bait boats were low, then you might have to pay 3.50 to 4 per bait. No sardinas late in the week due to the large swells.
FISHING
Billfish: The bite picked up on the billfish this week as there were good numbers of both Black and Blue Marlin caught. Most of them were in the 200-300 pound range but a few larger fish to 450 pounds were found as well. Both sides of the Cape were producing as the water was warm in both directions and there were still Striped Marlin to be found as well as some Sailfish in the 100 to 120 pound class. Lures produced bigger numbers than bait, even for those who were tossing bait at every Marlin they saw.
Yellowfin Tuna: The bite on Tuna has finally picked up a bit more as larger schools of school fish move through the area. Mostly in the 40-50 pound range, the fish are associated with porpoise for the most part and getting in front of the moving schools and dropping back bait has worked well. There are still larger fish being found at the Gorda Banks, the Inman Banks, the Cabrillo Seamount, off of the Lighthouse on the Pacific side and south of the San Jaime Banks. These fish are not a steady bite, but they have been quality fish ranging in size from 80 to 200 pounds. The fish at the Gorda and Inman Banks have been producing for anglers using Sardinas while larger lave baits have worked for the offshore fish, as well as larger lures trolled for Marlin.
Dorado: We finally had the Dorado show up, and they have been close to home. Both boats we had out yesterday did very well on fish to 30 pounds, and most boats fishing the area did well also with numbers ranging from 3 to 8 per boat. Getting the first one hooked up and attracting more to the boat with it was the key. Immediately gaffing the first fish made getting more take a bit longer. Straight off of the arch to a distance of five miles, and farther up the Pacific coast the same distance offshore produced the most fish, but they were also scattered about on the Cortez side.
Wahoo: I did not hear of a great bite on Wahoo this week, but there were fish being found in the same area as the Tuna, that is, on the banks and sea mounts. Most of the fish were single hook-up and the size averaged 35 pounds. Having just come off of the full moon I thought the bite would have been a bit better, and perhaps it was, but most of the fishermen were focusing on the Tuna and Marlin.
Inshore: The swells were smaller this week than last week with the exception of Thursday and Friday so there were more fishermen going after Roosterfish, and they were finding them on both sides of the Cape. Almost any sandy beach area with scattered rocks, or abutting a rocky point was producing fish averaging 25 pounds with an occasional 60 pound or larger fish in the mix. As well as Roosterfish there were Snapper and Bonito as well as Dorado to be found. With the good water conditions many of the Pangas were going a bit offshore and focusing on Tuna and Marlin.
Notes: The fishing has finally become good, sometimes very good! We have been waiting a long time, but all the warm water species are now biting well. The cool water species are not here in force, the Striped Marlin bite is slow and there are no Yellowtail, but Blue and Black Marlin, large Yellowfin Tuna and Dorado are thick enough to keep everyone busy and happy. Combine that with good weather and things are looking great right now! Until next week, tight lines!

Noel Gyger
August 22 to August 29, 2010
Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: Temperatures near normal and a little rain. The rain is just what we needed. Fishing for Sockeye, Chum, Steelhead, Cutthroat Trout, Bull Trout and Dolly Varden Char using fly, spin and conventional gear has been fair. The Skeena River was up then down this week but is still clean enough to fish. Sockeye fishing is good if you know the how and where to fish for them. Limit was lowered to 1 per day, 2 in possession on August 23rd. Steelhead and Coho fishing is excellent. It is not uncommon to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day and throw in the odd Chum and Pink. The Kalum River is in good shape. Steelhead and Coho are coming in now. Kitimat River is fishing very well for Coho, especially after the bump of water we had. The Douglas Channel is producing excellent numbers of Halibut and Coho.
The Harbour fishing is good. See New! Coho video clip below: Crab (Dungeness and King) fishing is fair. August is usually slow but the Crab you do trap are full of meat. Check out the detailed Ron Wakita report below. The Zymoetz (Copper) River has a little stain but clean enough to fish. Summer-run Steelhead are moving in now. Prince Rupert reports an excellent Coho fishery. Lots of Halibut following the Salmon. Meziadin Lake is fishing slow for Rainbow and Dollies. Bell Irving should start producing some excellent Steelhead fishing. Check out the full report from Marvin Reid below. Bulkley River. The rain has not affected the river too much. It is still nice and clear and fishing well. Lots of Pinks and Coho and Steelheading has done pretty good as well. Kispiox River finally got some rain. River has come up and has dirtied a little but is still fishable. Fishing has done well for some. Coho, Sockeye and Steelhead. The Morice River is still a designated area on evacuation alert and people are not allowed up there for recreational means. As far as I understand, no fishing access on the river at this time. Check out the Bob Melrose report below. This week guide reports came from Ron Wakita, Marc Girard, Trent Vines, Mike Holland, Tracey Hittel, Gill McKean, Jeff Carlson and Marvin Reid.

The rain has not affected the river too much. It is still nice and clear and fishing well. Lots of Pinks and Coho and Steelheaders have done pretty good as well.
Kalum River
The river is clean. I have had reports of Steelhead and Coho being caught. The run should build over the next couple of weeks as the fall run Steelhead are due.
Kispiox River
We finally got some rain. River has come up and has dirtied a little but is still fishable. Fishing has done well for some. Coho, Sockeye and Steelhead are in the river.
Morice River
River has no access because of forest fires in the area. Call Ministry of Forests for more information: 250-692-2200
Skeena River
The Skeena River was up then down this week but is still clean. Sockeye fishing is slowing as most of the run has gone through. Limit is lowered to 1 per day, 2 in possession on August 23rd. Steelhead and Coho fishing is excellent. It is not uncommon to catch both Steelhead and Coho on the same day and throw in the odd Chum and Pink. This “is” the time to be out fishing on the Skeena.
Zymoetz (Copper) River
The water is clean enough to fish. Guides report lots of Steelhead in the river.
Meziadin River and Lake
Meziadin Lake has been a bit of a strange week. Dollies and Rainbow, which are usually in abundant supply have been hard to locate and catch – read the full report by Marvin Reid below.
Kasiks River
Coho are coming into the river now. There has been a bump in the water due to some local rain and the fish are moving up river. Fish the deep darker pools where they may be holding.
Exchamsiks River
Coho are coming into the river now. There has been a bump in the water due to some local rain and the fish are moving up river. Fish the deep darker pools where they may be holding.
Bell Irving River
Should start producing some excellent Steelhead fishing over the next couple of months
Bear River
In Stewart, BC should have some Coho entering that system soon.
Babine River and Lake
So the Babine has been fishing well. The river has been good. It’s tough to say though because some anglers who know how to fish the spot do just amazing, while others have a tough time. But fishing has done well over all. The lake has been a bit slower compared to other years. But I found that because the water is so warm, you have to fish deeper. We were fishing at 60 feet, when we normally fish at 30, and then we did well. Report from Rachel Leffers of Oscar’s Source for Sports in Smithers BC.

Kitimat River Coho Season in the Kitimat River is starting to get really good. A few crucial elements aligned this week to create some very good Coho fishing in the Kitimat:
1. We received some very much needed rain.
2. We received some big high tides this week
3. The rain stopped and the river dropped and remained clean.
4. Coho moved into the Kitimat River.
The end result was a bunch of happy fishermen, women and kids. Goose Creek and the lower, Lower Dike were the hot holes in the lower Kitimat with the Haisla Bridge producing sporadically. By the end of the week, the drift boaters had very good results drifting in the middle and upper sections of the Kitimat River especially after the rain.
Aug 22 9:02 PM Marc Girard and Ferd and Mary Bouzanne just saw a Kermodei Bear at the Big Spruce. They were unable to get any photos. Anglers please be on the look out for a photo opportunity of a lifetime.
Aug 26 I drifted the Kitimat River on a morning drift with Trent Vines and we hooked 6 Coho and landed 3. Trent is one of my Associate Guides and we were doing a pre-client drift in preparation for a booking we have coming up. We pride ourselves in staying dialed to the hot holes and tracking where the fish are holding as the river conditions change. Today's Coho were caught with Jim's Jigs and Rainbow Jigs. We tried Hot Shotting a few holes but the Coho seemed to want to chase the jigs. The Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca Hot Shots have been our most effective lures to date but jigs were more effective this morning. I enjoy fishing with my Associate Guides as they are awesome anglers and wonderful guides. I affirmed my faith in Trent's ability today but I discovered that he is a lousy singer Thanks for an awesome morning of fishing Trent.
Aug 26 Marc Girard, an associate guide for Reliable Guide and Charters drifted with his friends Clint and Gerry on an afternoon drift. They landed 2 Coho on their drift. Congratulations Guys. Anyone wishing to book a trip with Marc please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca
Aug 27 Reliable Guide and Charters had the pleasure of guiding Vincent Zylinski, his son Steve and his daughter Terri. Also along on the drift was Terri's boyfriend Mike. The Zylinski group was guided by Trent Vines and Mike Holland. During the drift with our clients, Trent's boat landed 7 Coho of 10 hooked and Mike's boat landed 6 Coho of 12 hooked. Mike and Trent had done pre-client drifts on Thursday the day before. The catch results verify the importance of pre-clients trips and the proof is in the results. The Kitimat River Coho run is still in its early stages but Mike and Trent did an excellent job providing our clients with very good numbers of opportunities to hook, fight and land Coho during their drift. Congratulations to Vince, Terri, Steve and Mike on their catch! Thank You for using our guiding services. Well done Trent and Mike! Any angler wishing to book a trip with either Mike or Trent please contact Noel Gyger noel@noegyger.ca
Aug 27 Mike Herzberg, an associate guide for Reliable Guide and Charters fishing with his long time friend and fishing partner Alvaro hooked 12 Coho and landed 6. Mike and Alvaro were using Luhr Jensen http://www.rapala.ca/ #35 Hot Shots and Pink Jigs made by Rainbow Jigs. Mike and Alvaro are both very gifted anglers. Well done Mike and Alvaro! Congratulations! Anyone wishing to book a trip with Mike please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca
Aug 27 Our Mobile Tackle Van logged 12 Coho hooked with 7 landed at the lower, Lower Dike and took this photo of Dick Woodcock and his 10lb Coho. Dick and most of the anglers were bar fishing with Yakama Bait Spin n Glos with Gibbs/Delta http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ hoochies. Other successful anglers were casting Gibbs Koho http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ 65 Blue Scale spoons with red back. Congratulation to all!
SUMMARY: The Kitimat River Coho season is progressing nicely and should have lots of Coho available to be caught in the upcoming Kitimat Chamber of Commerce Derby Sept. 4th and 5th Labor Day weekend. See poster below for all the details. Although other Salmon species such as Chum and Pink are in the river the main focus with be on Coho.
Douglas Channel
Aug 23 I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friend from Hawaii in the Douglas Channel, Kitimat Harbour. We hooked 7 Coho but only managed to land 3 during our morning trip. Losing Coho at the boat is a common and frustrating occurrence. It also provides awesome material to harass your fishing partner. Although we only landed 3 Coho we had a lot of fun harassing each other. The hottest rod was the `'high line' with a Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ 8 oz. slip weight and a Hot Spot Blue/Green UV Flasher and a Rhys Davis Metallic Blue/Green Anchovy Head with a 4 1/2' Anchovy.
Aug 23 Wes Owen fishing with his good friend Wayne Southgate landed 3 Coho in a couple of hours fishing in the Kitimat Harbour. They were sitting in the coffee shop and had an inspiration to go fishing. 20 minutes later they had lines in the water and landed 3 Coho because they responded to the inspiration to go. Wes and Wayne would probably have otherwise sat in the local A&W telling fish stories rather than creating one. Well done guys! Next time please feel free to phone me to join you.
Aug 24 My good friend Ron Jones and I fished the Kitimat Harbour again on the morning slack tide. We had poor results landing Coho the day before so I downsized hooks to a #2 Treble Gamagatsu http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ hook. We landed the first 4 Coho we hooked. We were feeling pretty good about ourselves only to lose the next 4. Such is life in the Fishing world. The Fish Gods have a way of keeping anglers humble. We did however come home with 12 Dungeness Crab. Bon Appetite!
Aug 25 Wes Owen of Golden Fishing Adventures fishing with his clients John and son’s John, Gene, Bryce, and Derek landed 5 Coho, a Pink and a Chinook in the Kitimat Harbour. They lost a few more but the bite in the Kitimat Harbour was not as good as it normally is this time of year. Wes commented that his clients enjoyed themselves onboard Wes' 30' Bayliner. Congratulations! Well done Skipper.
Aug 22 to Aug 28 Andreas Handl of Kingfish Adventures submitted these photos of his clients and their catch. I apologize for not posting the names of Andrea's clients but I had not received the names at the time of posting this report. They all look pretty happy with their catch. They deserve Congratulations. Great Job Andreas! Anyone wishing to book a trip with Andreas please contact Noel Gyger noel@noelgyger.ca
SUMMARY: The strong afternoon winds limited many boaters to morning trips in the Kitimat Harbour Fishery. Although there were some Coho caught in the Kitimat Harbour the catch numbers are not as good as previous years during the same time period. Most boaters are returning to the marina with 4 or 5 Coho in the cooler rather than their limit as they have had in previous years. I also wish the catch rates were better but I can only report the catches as they are, not what we wish them to be. Many of the Saltwater boaters who fish the Kitimat Harbour Fishery every year think that there are more Coho to come based on the catch rates of Coho on the outer Douglas Channel. Time will tell. Stay Tuned. Halibut continues to be good but many boaters catch their Coho first and then go Bottom Fishing if time allows.
With the economic downturn, we have plenty of days available for Driftboat trips, Saltwater Trips and Jet Boat Trips. The Coho Season is shaping up to be a good one and we would be happy to help create an awesome fishing experience for anyone interested. Please contact Noel noel@noelgyger.ca
Thank You to everyone for contributing photos and info for this fishing report.
Sincerely and Cheers
Ron Wakita

Jeff Carlson: BC Style Fishing Charters and J&E Tackle Shop, Prince Rupert BC
Hi Noel, with sunshine and calm waters on August 18, 19 and 20th, it was fairly productive fishing Coho at “the Balls” north end of Dundas Island with a good chance for Chinook Salmon. Also, I fished the 21st and 22nd at “Indian Head” at the mouth of the Work Channel. With the weather turning for the worst I had to cancel my trips for the 23rd & 24th – gale-forced wind warning.
If the weather is calm and you can make the long journey into the Hecate Strait, there are a lot of Coho Salmon held up there. It is not uncommon to catch Halibut on the troll while fishing for Coho in the Strait. Thanks. Jeff

Jason Munday: Fish Tales Tackle Shop, Terrace BC
Hello Noel, well, Chinook are at a close. Sockeye are pretty much done also as both are in full spawn mode. Steelhead & Coho fishing has been and is very good right now. Coho fishing will be picking up soon as more and more are coming into the river. Fishers are doing very well in the main stream Skeena and in a couple of weeks rivers like the Lakelse will be Hot! (Hopefully). The Lakelse River is teaming with Pink Salmon right now. It’s fun for the kids to get out there and catch Pinks as they are an easy catch for the kids and a ton of fun. My kids Aaron & Brianna spent two days just hauling them in one after another with just a simple pink Rooster Tail lure and a spin rod.
Fish Tales has incredible deals on all of your fishing needs. We invite everyone to come in and check out our full inventory of equipment so you are properly prepared to catch your monster fish! We also have a complementary phone for our out of town guests to use to call home. Also, Fish Tales would love to display your favorite picture on our in-store BIG SCREEN. Please email your pictures to jason@fishtalesterrace.com so we can display them for all to see!
Happy Fishing to all from Fish Tales Fly & Tackle Shop!! P.S. We just received our shipment of Premium Roe!! Yes, That Roe!!!
Cheers!

Marvin Reid: Meziadin and Northern BC
I would like to say that the fishing at Meziadin has been great over the past week, unfortunately, I am unable to do so. Fishing has been quiet, which is unusual for this time of year. I have not been out on the lake this past week myself, but speaking with anglers that have been out, things are rather slow. Dollies and some nice Rainbows are being caught, but not in the numbers one would normally expect for this time of year.
Locally, the Bell Irving River should start producing some excellent Steelhead fishing over the next couple of months, as well as the Bear River in Stewart should have some Coho entering that system as well.
Just a reminder to our readers, access to Meziadin Lake will be severely curtailed after Sept. 22nd when the Park gate will be locked for the season. But there are still a few weeks to enjoy some local fishing, as well as some awesome scenery.
Marvin Reid
The commercial salmon fishery on the Meziadin is over and the targeted amount of Sockeye have been harvested.
The other good news is that fresh Sockeye continue to enter the Meziadin system which means that chances are still good that bright fish can be caught for awhile yet.
Meziadin Lake Provincial Park will be closing on Sept. 22nd, and the gate will be locked. The boat launch that is located on the Meziadin River will also be inaccessible, as it is on private property, and the road leading to it will be gated as well.
Trips can be booked noel@noelgyger.ca by the hour or by the day. I use a 19ft Harbercraft powered by a 75 Yamaha.
Best regards, Marvin Reid

Steelhead Paradise 2010
John Fennelly wrote a book back in 1963 that let the word out of the incredible Steelhead fishing to be found in the waters of the Skeena drainage. The book was titled 'Steelhead Paradise'. It told the world of the many rivers that have now become the promised land for the world's biggest Steelhead and her passionate lovers. Wherever Steelheaders gather, they will talk with reverent tones about the Skeena, Kalum, Copper(Zymoetz), Kispiox, Sustat, Babine, Suskwa, Bulkley and Morice. For here, lie some of the best Steelhead fishing in the world with relatively easy access. True, that probably many locals, wish that nobody knew but them, but that is evolution. Secrets don't stay secrets for very long. Much like those Montanans who wish 'A River Runs Through it' had never been brought to the big screen, we in the Northwest of BC like to guard our secret. But the word is out, we have to live with it
.
Steelheading has seen some lows and highs over the years. Habitat destruction, mismanagement, ocean survival, overfishing, commercial interception and the catch all phrase 'Global Warming and Climate Change' can be the obvious excuses for low numbers. When we have good numbers returning they can simply say it is 'Ocean Survival'. I think, that it is most likely a crap shoot, and they don't really know for sure until the run is in. Much like the Fraser River Sockeye and the many stories of the imminent end of that run, lo and behold, this year they are talking about the best return in 100 years. Go figure. I guess what they are saying is, that it is a guess.
This year the Tyee Index for Steelhead show a roughly 75% increase over the decade average, and about equal to the bonanza years of 1998-2002. Now as we know nothing is written in stone when it comes to predictions, but it certainly looks good. Even in the bad years we have had visiting anglers come here and speak fondly of the fish, the scenery, the beautiful rivers and the friends they have met on the river.
Sometimes we just don't appreciate what we have. Many times I have asked a local angler if he needs his fall Steelhead tag, to be told 'No way I'm going to buy a Steelhead Tag if I can't kill one', only to find the next guy in line has planed and saved for years, for his dream trip to BC in the hopes of catching a Wild Steelhead. which he then promptly and with great care must now release.
Steelhead, are by coincidence, or a master plan, also found in the most beautiful places on the planet. It just wouldn't be the same if Steelhead were found out in the plains or desert somewhere. Snow capped mountains, fall colors, eagles, bears both black and Grizzly, spent salmon, rainbows, fog, rain or snow, and postcard days are as much apart of Steelheading as are the fish.
The Skeena and its watershed have yielded Steelhead that only dreams are made of. Each year Steelhead are released, as they must be in BC, in the 48' range. Although the average fish is in the 10-12 pound mark, make no mistake, there be monsters here. Some days, we would work hard for a couple of takes, other days it was just too easy and we would limit ourselves to a couple of fish and move on, or try for that one unforgettable photo shot. As anglers, the next cast holds a lot of promise, but in Steelheading that next cast keeps us going long past when most anglers just have to take a break. A brief pause, a momentary rest and back to the cast, working the pool, keyed to the slight hesitation of the drift which may or may not have been a take. Senses are focused, you can't be thinking of other problems when you are on the river. It is just you and the fish.
Summer runs of Steelhead can be found in the Skeena in early July but in the upper reaches above Terrace the season starts about mid-August. Rivers are lower than normal for this time of the year and water is in great shape. Terrace, the Hazelton’s, Smithers and Houston are the main outfitting posts with accommodations, meals and guides available. Guides have an allotment of rod days and are usually booked in advance. Most guides are not available for one day trips as these are filled with anglers for 5-7 days at a time.
Although most visiting anglers and a large majority of local anglers pursue Steelhead with the fly they can be fished with spoons, spinners, bottom bouncing, pulling plugs, jigs or float fishing. A lot of our rivers are Wild Steelhead catch and release and single barbless hook only. Great care should be taken to bring the fish in quickly, release only when fish have fully recovered. Fish should be kept in the water and not skidded up on shore. If taking photos, plan the picture ahead of time and fish should only be out of the water for a few seconds.
Enjoy your last August weekend. September is just a few days away.
Prince Rupert Excellent Coho out of Rupert with the Northerns showing up. Lots of Halibut following the salmon runs in.
Kispiox River Finally we have got some rain! River has come up and has dirtied a little but is still fishable. Fishing has done well for some. Coho, Sockeye, and Steelhead,
Bulkley River The rain has not affected the river too much. It is still nice and clear and fishing well. Lots of Pinks, and Coho and Steelheading has done pretty good as well.
Morice River The Morice is still a designated area on evacuation alert and people are not allowed up there for recreational means. As far as I understand, no fishing access on the Morice at this time. Please call Ministry of Forests for more information: 250-692-2200
Be Bear Aware and carry Pepper Spray. Check your spray for expiry date!!!
Enjoy your weekend.

Video description by Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters. I had the pleasure of fishing with my good friends Noel Gyger and Ron Jones on Wednesday, August 25, 2010. We hooked 7 Coho and landed 4 in a half day of fishing. Among the 4 Coho we landed was a double header that Ron and I landed 2 for 2. It was an enjoyable morning of fishing with 2 very good friends. We caught some Coho, ate some Crab, and told some fish stories while fishing in the Kitimat Harbour.
We were trolling with Hot Spot's Blue/Green UV Flasher and Rhys Davis Blue/Green Metallic Anchovie Teaser and Rhys Davis Anchovies from Berry's Bait and Tackle. The high lines were the most active using Gibbs http://www.gibbsfishing.com/ 8 and 12oz. slip weights. These were the hottest rigs for this week but as many anglers can appreciate, the hot lures can change as the season progresses. Note: to watch the video in the highest possible quality be sure to choose the option 480p on YouTube…
