Cabo Fish Report
April 27-May 3, 2009
Notes: This week I decided to start with the notes instead of ending with them. I thought that giving an overview at the start of the report would allow you to decide what sections you would like to check out. I did not fish this past week and there were very few boats going out due to the Swine Flu scare. We have had no cases in Baja California, none, zero, zip, and nada. Even with that knowledge, the media has hyped up this flu so much that almost every charter we and other companies have had on the books has cancelled their trips. We still have a couple this month, but overall it looks like a good month for us to take a vacation. Since there is no Swine Flu here, maybe we will go up to the East Cape, don’t want to go to California or Texas, they have cases there and we might get sick, lol!! Given the fact that there were few boats out this week, the information I have is based on just a few trips, not the normal numbers.
WEATHER: We had a couple of partly cloudy days this week but most of the time it was clear and blue. We started the week with some clouds on Sunday and had a mostly cloudy day this last Saturday. Nighttime temperatures have been in the low 70’s and daytime highs have been in the low 90’s. We had a bit of wind on the Pacific side Thursday and Friday that cooled things off a bit over there, but there was almost no wind on the Cortez side this week.
WATER: Surface conditions on the Pacific side were great with swells at 3-5 feet and only a few days of wind at the end of the week putting some decent chop on the water. The Cortez side of the Cape showed us great conditions with small swells of 1-2 feet and only light winds. Water temperatures remained constant as there was very little change in the direction or speed of the currents. On the Cortez side the water was a very consistent 75-76 degrees with it warming slightly up toward the Punta Gorda area. On the Pacific side the cold water remained 64-66 degrees along the beach and extending in a plume to the south. Outside the 1,000-fathom line it warmed back up to 72-73 degrees. The cool water was slightly more green that the warm water.
BAIT: Bait availability was very good with so few boats going out, at least at the beginning of the week. At the end of the week even the bait boats were taking nights off because of the low number of boats going out. Mackerel and Caballito were the normal $3 per bait and Sardinas were hard to come by.
FISHING:
BILLFISH: There were fish seen and a few fish caught up around the 1,000-fathom line on the Pacific side as well as quite a few seen and a few caught around the 95 spot. These were Striped Marlin that averaged 120 pounds. Catches averaged on release per boat with a couple of boats releasing three fish. Live bait tossed in front of tailing fish was the best technique but a few were caught on lures.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: There were still quite a few of the football 10-15 pound Yellowfin found around the area of the San Jaime Bank this week and the boats that got into them had a great time because of the lack of pressure. There were reports of some larger fish being found at the Cabrilla Seamount, supposedly fish to 50 pounds. All the Tuna found this week were with porpoise and feathers in dark colors were the best bet for the football fish while live bait dropped into the middle of the porpoise were reported to get the larger fish at the Seamount.
DORADO: Almost every boat that fished the Cortez side this week caught at least one Dorado, and some of the fish were really nice sized, to 50 pounds. Finding the feeding Frigate birds really helped zero in on an area, then slow trolling live bait got the fish to bite. Multiple fish were caught by leaving the first one in the water and dropping back a chunk of cut bait; getting any fish following to bite.
WAHOO: I did not hear of any Wahoo this week.
INSHORE: Inshore fishing was the most prevalent type done this week. Due to economic reasons most likely as the Pangas cost a lot less than cruisers. Whatever the reason, the inshore fishery is still a happening thing with every Panga getting Sierra and having a good shot at Yellowtail to 20 pounds. Toss in the possibility of Dorado, Amberjack, Pargo and Grouper and almost every boat came in with a nice mixed bag of fish. Action was scattered along both sides of the Cape.
P.S.: My gardening is coming along great, I have gotten a chance to catch up on my reading and hopefully get some time on the driving range. Until next week, tight lines!

Cabo Fish Report
April 20-26, 2009
WEATHER: There were a few clouds in the sky this week but for the most part we had sunny and clear skies. It feels as if summer is fast approaching as our daytime temperatures have been a few degrees warmer every week, this week we averaged 88 degrees in the daytime and 71 degrees in the mornings. I almost turned on the air conditioning last night, but then thought better of it, after all, that stuff costs a lot of money and I turned on the floor fan instead!
WATER: We had light winds at the beginning of the week and they picked up quite a bit on Thursday, by the weekend they had died back down. The winds were our typical northwest winds and they kicked up the swells and waves for a couple of days. By the end of the week things had calmed down. On the Cortez side of the Cape things were a bit calmer since the wind did not shift very much and the swells stayed small with just a light wind chop. There was a very defined current line running from the tip of the Cape to the south-southeast where the western side was a cool 64-67 degrees and the eastern side was 70-71 degrees. The cool water was in a band about 10 miles wide 30 miles to the south and the distance between the cool water and the warm water was one mile. On Saturday there was an 81-degree hot spot on the surface that ran between the 1150 and the Cabrilla Seamount.
BAIT: Once again it was a mix of Caballito and Mackerel at $3 per bait and the Sardinas were hard to come by here in Cabo. The little guys were hard to get in San Jose as well; you had to be early to get a shot at these baits.
FISHING:
BILLFISH: The warm spot of water between the 1150 and the Cabrilla Seamount was expected to give up a couple of Blues or Blacks but failed to produce much of anything at all other than a couple of Dorado. A few boats were able to scratch up one, two, or in a few instances, three Striped Marlin while working between the shore and the 95 Spot. There were a few tailing fish sighted on the Cortez side but the kudos went to the guys who were willing to use their electronics to spot fish down at 100-150 feet and drop bait to them.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: We had a couple of good days of fishing for football Tuna in the 5-15 pound class in the middle of the week. The fish were with a large pod of dolphin on the Pacific side just to the south of the San Jaime Banks. When the wind picked up on Thursday the fish were more difficult to find. When they were biting earlier I had no problem getting limits for my guys as we were covered up five times and had multiple hook-ups every pass. Small feathers or lures in the 4-5 inch size and in red or black were the ticket as the Tuna were feeding on small squid. There were also dolphin that had fish to the south, but once again at a distance of 25 miles and they were football fish.
DORADO: This week was a repeat of last week, and it of the week before. Just like last week, once again it was a case of scattered fish. Almost every boat was able to get a Dorado this week, and a few boats managed to get three or four. The warm water on the Cortez side produced most of the fish and the best area was three to five miles off the beach, the same area that held most of the Striped Marlin.
WAHOO: I did not hear of any Wahoo this week.
INSHORE: Just like last week, the bite is still on for Sierra and Yellowtail, it’s decent for Amberjack and Pargo and there are a few Grouper to add to the mix. The Yellowtail were up around Los Arcos on the Pacific side and the Sierra were on the Cortez side of the Cape. When the winds blew hard in the middle of the week the water really greened up on the Pacific coast and most of the action moved to the Cortez side.
NOTES: Thank you for all the replies about my questions on Sun River last week, they helped me a lot. Denny, I look forward to hearing from you when you come down. Another game of golf planned for this week and perhaps some time on the water as well. SUMMARY: The weather has been good with average day time temperatures and no rain after Tuesday. The rivers are on the rise as more snow melt comes down. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape. Check out my two reports below for April 20th and 22nd. The first Chinook are in the river now. They have been seen rolling in the lower pools. The main stem Skeena River is dirty and not fishable. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below.

FISHING THIS WEEK: GOOD
LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 20-pound Steelhead Where: Kalum River Angler: Rob Vodola
WEATHER: Sunny with cloudy periods. High 15. UV index 5 or moderate. Sunrise 6:07 AM Sunset 8:58 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 14 degrees. Minimum -1.1 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: Is too dirty to fish. Fishing the clean seams of the tributary rivers is a good idea now.
KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape and rising slowly. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Spring runs of Steelhead should be coming in. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. Fresh early run Chinook (King) Salmon are expected anytime. We have caught them around mid April. Chinook have been seen rolling in the lower river.
April 20…Rob Vodola, Carey Braun, Mike Pederson and I fished the Kalum River on April 20th. Due to the steady rain (no wind) the water was on the rise (big time), lots of debris suspended in the water, which are the worst fishing conditions I know of. Despite these conditions Rob and I landed a Steelhead each (both female)…see photo of the week. Mike lost one close to the net. We, maybe, had another couple of chances. Mike’s knees are still shaking! Fishing was good but the catching was a little slow.
April 22…Both upper and lower Kalum River is in great shape although very clean, sometimes too clear to hook a lot of fish…but Rob, Brent and I fished and we had a blast. I hooked 5 landed 2. Rob hooked 6 landed 3 and Brent hooked 3 and lost one close to the net. The fish landed were mostly dark males in spawning colours. The one female looked very nice. Females always look very nice, spawning or not.
This is a Classified River year round and can be guided from March 15 through October 15 only. The Steelhead record is 32-pounds. To see a photo of this fish cast to: http://noelgyger.ca/records/Record003.jpg The angler is Dennis Therrien.
ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is too dirty to fish.
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.
KITIMAT RIVER: We received heavy rain last weekend including Monday and the river level rose and was unfishable by Tuesday. I logged the height of the river on Tuesday morning when the Kitimat River was the highest it has been this Steelhead season. I logged the height again Wednesday morning 23 hours later and the Kitimat River had dropped 3 1/2 feet and was fishable.
Before the Kitimat became unfishable, John Love from Smithers reports landing a Steelhead on Sunday April 19th that weighed 19lb 11oz. below the washouts in the upper Kitimat section.
John said, 'he was fishing with his fishing partners, Patrick Hudson took the first photo showing Norm Fallows landing the fish with the cradle and the second photo was take prior to release'. Congratulations John,Patrick and Norm! And thank you for sending the pictures and details for the readers of this report to enjoy.
When the river is high and dirty she is unfishable these conditions usually entice fresh, silver Steelhead into the Kitimat River. When the river level drops and water clarity becomes fishable usually more fish have migrated into the system to be caught. This observation evolved as anglers started to catch very nice Steelhead on Wednesday. This is the case with most rivers in the North West.
Spencer from Terrace hooked three Steelhead on Wednesday and caught and released two silver Steelhead, one had sea lice. He was float fishing a pink worm in the middle section of the Kitimat River. 'Mr. G' landed one on the upper section of the Kitimat on Wednesday as well.
Todd Haynes of Nautical West Fishing Adventures and fishing with his fishing partner, Patrick Havig hooked two Steelhead on Thursday landing one about 16lbs on the upper section.
On Friday, Todd and Patrick hooked five steelhead and landed four. Two of these are featured in this report. See the photos in Todd’s report below. These were also caught in the upper section of the Kitimat.
Two Fishers using spey rods were in our Tackle store speaking to Ariel and they landed two silver Steelhead at Humphry’s on Friday. Jason Bunn landed an 18lb chrome Steelhead at the Power Lines on Friday. The Kitimat Hatchery brood collection team reported having two bright Steelhead in their brood collection barge Friday. Mike Campbell reports catching a bunch of Trout.
I did a 'homework drift' (is how I refer to pre-trips prior to clients) on Saturday. It was actually a multi purpose trip as I was fishing with my son Corey who is fifteen. We were also doing an ongoing training session rowing the drift boat. Corey had been rowing since he was twelve and we are evolving his rowing skills every year. This was also a quality father/son fishing day with a very good friend and associate guide, Marc Girard.
We drift from the Eighteen Mile bridge to the Big Spruce which is a very long drift (actually too long to fish effectively) but I wanted to show Corey and Marc the entire system. We hooked seven Steelhead but only managed to land two. The two we landed were very nice Steelhead, one was Big and the other was bright. Typical Male/Female scenario. The male was big and the female was pretty. The first Steelhead Corey landed below the second washout was on a float with two jensen eggs and white wool (one of my favorite rigs). Marc hooked it and passed the rod to Corey. Thank You Marc! As you will notice from the picture of Marc holding this Steelhead it is a little coloured and has been in the system for a while. We measured this Steelhead and the calculation worked out to 20.5lbs. It was a proud moment to watch my son land a twenty pound plus Steelhead even though he hadn't hooked it himself. We are both grateful to Marc. Corey hooked and landed the second Steelhead on a Hot Shot on his own. I had this hot shot custom coloured by Luhr Jensen. This was a bright female but no sea lice.
As we drifted into the middle and lower section we noticed the fish were brighter. Although we didn't land them we saw the colour of the fish while we were fighting them. We also focused our efforts to fly fishing in the lower Kitimat. I have a personal challenge that I call the 'Triple Crown'. The 'Triple Crown' is to land a Steelhead on a Hot Shot, on tackle and on a fly in the same day. Corey had landed one on a tackle and on a Hot Shot so we wanted Corey to land one on a fly. We never did land one on a fly but 'nothing ventured-nothing gained'. It was a Great day of fishing with my son Corey and a very Good friend Marc.
As we drifted by the Power Lines Terry said that he lost a very bright Steelhead and his partner Dave landed a beautiful bright fish in the morning. Brice from P.G just landed a bright, hatchery Steelhead on the Hatchery Island this morning (Sunday). In fact I just received the info as I am writing this report.
ANGLERS BEWARE of a problem spot located just below Saw Mill in the 'new Nalabila' channel. It is passable but stay to the left and make sure all the rods are low and are not hanging out of the boat (photo above is taken looking down stream).
The weather is bright and sunny and most of the Steelhead are bright and shiny.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Jason Bunn reports landing a Halibut down the Douglas Channel. Jason said that he was going to email the picture and details of the Halibut but has not done so in time for this report. He probably went fishing.
Most boaters are reporting good numbers of crab and I spoke to one group from Vernon returning home with two halibut, a 24lb and a 10lb. chicken plus their limit of crab. These were not big Halibut but these folks were happy with their catch. They said 'this was our first trip, the weather was good, the scenery was beautiful and we have fish to take home'. Anglers are reminded that the shell must be left on the crab while transporting.
The Salt Water fishery will become more active as the weather is improving. Stay Tuned to this report for future updates.

Fishing Report from: Gill McKean of Westcoast Fishing Adventures
Morning Noel thought I would get my report in early as we are working on 20 days straight guiding it has been a fantastic season!
The photo above is of John Lundsten from San Diego, California this was his first ever Steelhead on the FLY as well as his first Steelhead ever!! at the young age of 70 what a fish and what a moment for us to share. Great job John this was his first and I don't think it will be his last!!
The fish are still coming in good numbers. We are seeing bright fresh fish every day! At the beginning of the week we had a hard rain and blew most Region 6 rivers out. On the bright side we saw bright shiny fish arrive on the dropping water. All I can say is Yeee Haaa! There have been a few reports of the Kalum producing a few early Chinook. The earliest I have landed a 45 pounder was April 14th. They wake you up on your steelhead gear.
All other rivers are producing good numbers of steelhead as well. Good luck

Fishing Report from: Todd Haynes of Nautical West Sport Fishing – April 26th
Hi Noel, the Kitimat River has been fishing good all week, except for Monday. I have included a couple of pics. Lots of people are out enjoying this special fishery. Halibut and Crab fishing is a little slow in the Douglas Channel right now. I have heard the Chinook fishing out of Prince Rupert is really starting to pick up. The ones caught are not too big, around 20-pounds. Most of these fish are bound for the Skeena River where they will swim long distances to their home tributary waters. Take care. Todd Haynes.

The first half of April has seen some good bass fishing action. Most of our trips have been done on Butler Chain and Johns Lake. Although we have seen some rather strange weather for this time of year for us, with a cold front coming thru, the action has remained steady for the most part, with us having to work harder for our bass on the day the cold front slammed us.
Most of our action on Butler Chain has come from docks, wacky rigged Gitem KO’s and weightless Warlocks in Green Pumpkin have done a great job catching bass up to 5 pounds. When docks have slowed in producing bass, we have moved to the cypress trees, tossing baits at the trees and letting it fall straight down to the base of the tree, this has triggered some very good action for us.
Johns Lake has seen scattered schooling action fist thing in the mornings, usually just as the sun makes it half way thru the Deer Island cut. Docks have been excellent producers as well as my drift pattern thru the middle of the main lake, tossing Steel Shads, these baits have caught us a ton of bass out there, as well as a few 1 ½ pound crappie. Offshore scattered grass beds have been holding some bass with the Gitem Twin Liz rigged with 1/8th ounce weight catching them all. We have caught a few bass on 1 ounce spinner baits, but that bite has not been consistent enough to keep us using them.

East Cape
By all accounts, the past few days have been the best in 2009 so far. With the help of a floating dead whale and flat seas, the dorado action was ‘off the charts’ providing nonstop action on both fly and conventional.
Inshore action continued with its winning ways providing plenty of bait which attracted roosters, jacks and pompano…enough to keep rods bent. Even after being thrashed last week by wind, the beach has turned the corner and those fishing from shore in the past few days have had the kind of action normally not expected until later in the spring

Very few anglers went out but the commercial guys are still talking about the dorado around the shark buoys west of the Entrada. Skipjack and small tuna remain in easy striking distance of Boca de Soledad.
The Esteros have also been lightly fished but there were a few grouper and mangrove snapper all the way up to the top end of the bay. There are also a few small halibut on the sandy beaches near the inside of the Boca.

Being the blue water has moved out beyond the 24 mile mark, the blue water fishing is practically non-existent this week for the sport fishing fleet. They are only averaging less than a sailfish a day per boat. The only reports of decent blue water fishing are coming in from the commercial pangueros. They are working an area from 45 to 50 miles out, and scoring on yellowfin tuna and blue marlin.
There is a hot bite going on however. The jack crevalle, chulas and black skipjack tuna are providing lots of action for the light-line fishermen. The majority of the action is taking place between 1/2 to 2 miles off the beach, all up and down the coast. (A chula is an excellent tasting small tuna, between 4 and 6 pounds, with white meat and a serious set of dentures).
Most of the inshore fish are being taken on trolled Rapalas.
Talking to Jaime this morning on the municipal pier, he told me how yesterday they even encountered a school of large jacks at 17 miles. The 25 pound (average) fish were so hungry he ended up with a quadruple hookup on his sailfish baits.

Cabo San Lucas
The striped marlin bite has slowly begun to pick back up with fish showing on the surface on the Cortez side of the Cape. Most of the fish being caught are found tailing on the surface and the bites have been pretty evenly mixed between live and dead bait. On the Pacific side there have been a couple of fish found, but overall everyone pretty much agreed that inside the Pacific side banks the water is too cool for much action. There were reports of a couple of blue and black marlin giving some adrenalin rushes out there.
Once again the yellowfin tuna failed to show in any numbers. There were a few fish found, but they were at quite a distance from Cabo. It took several hours running time to get into the productive waters, such as they were, and once there it took quite a long time to find any fish, it there were any. A few schools were found 40 miles to the southwest, in the 20 to 35 pound class. That meant a long run for the possibility of getting a couple of small tuna…most anglers said never mind.
There were mostly scattered dorado; however, most boats were able to get at least one, and a few boats managed to get three or four. The warm water on the Cortez side produced the fish and the best area was three to five miles off the beach in the same area that held most of the striped marlin.
Wahoo were scattered with a few fish found in the early part of the week in the Punta Gorda, Inman Bank area. These fish averaged 25 pounds and swimming plugs had the best results.
Sierra and yellowtail continued to provide the best inshore action, but there was also a fair bite on amberjack and pargo and a few grouper to add to the mix. Most of the action early in the week was taking place on the Cortez side of the Cape but as the winds died down the bite moved back to the Pacific side off of Los Arcos.

SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with some rain towards the weekend. The snow pack is starting to melt and the rivers are on the rise. The Steelhead that were holding in deep dark pools are on the move. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape even though the water is rising. The first Chinook should be coming into the Kalum River soon. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is dirty and not fishable. The main stem Skeena River is dirty but is still borderline fishable below Terrace. A good run of spring Steelhead and Chinook (King) Salmon should be coming in now. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. WEATHER: Cloudy. Periods of rain mixed with light snow beginning late this morning. Rainfall amount 5 to 10 mm. Fog patches dissipating this morning. High plus 5. Sunrise 6:23 AM Sunset 8:44 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 13 degrees. Minimum 2 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: Is rising and coloured up. Fishing around Terrace is poor but fishing below Terrace should be OK and fishing the clean seams of the tributary rivers is a good idea now.
KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape and is coming up slowly. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Spring runs of Steelhead should be coming in. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well. Fresh early run Chinook (King) Salmon are expected anytime. We have caught them around mid April.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is very dirty (copper colour). The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon is open.

KITIMAT RIVER: The Steelheading on the Kitimat River is starting to get really good with one outstanding fish to report!
Rob Brice landed a 14lb steelhead on the Kitimat River on April 12th. Rob was fishing with his fishing partner Cal Tant who landed a 'bigger Steelhead than Rob' on April 13th on the upper Kitimat River. Cal said he landed this Steelhead in the first pool below the first wash out. Well Done Rob and Cal!
Another angler who wishes to remain anonymous, as he did in last week's report, hooked four
Steelhead and landed two upriver on April 13th. Both fish were released. I respect his request to remain unnamed and I really appreciate his contribution for this report and my log. 'Anonymous' is a pretty long title so I will respectfully refer to him as 'Mr. G'. Congratulations 'Mr. G.' on a great morning of fishing and Thank You for the info.
The info provided to me by anglers helps to identify the strength of the run as well timing of this year's Steelhead run. I also respect that not all anglers especially Steelheaders wish to reveal their favorite fishing holes and I will not reveal them if requested not to do so. The catch information is very important to me for my log and this report.
Duane Teneycke another avid local Steelheader reports landing a 15lb wild Buck on April 14th from the mid Kitimat section.
Last but not least! John Heinonkari caught a Big, Wild, Steelhead pushing 30lbs on the Kitimat River, Saturday April 11th. John said, 'I'm 44 years old and this was the Biggest Steelhead of my life. I have fished the Kitimat Area since the early 70's with my father for over 39 years. This fish was at least 28lb maybe 30; this was the biggest Steelhead of my life!” John caught hundreds of Steelhead over the years. John possesses a quiet almost humble personality and has landed five or six Steelhead over twenty pounds on the Kitimat River. This was the first one that was pushing thirty. Well Done John!
I first heard the news of John landing this Huge Steelhead from local residents, Markus Feldoff and Jody Dennil who were in our tackle store. I have known John for thirty years as we both grew up fishing in Kitimat and I am extremely happy for him. It was like receiving news of someone that you know winning the lottery. In the fishing world landing a Steelhead pushing thirty pounds is like winning the lottery!
When I called John to share the moment, the sense of his accomplishment and excitement was prevalent in our conversation but John seemed almost humbled by the experience. That is the way John is. John did not get a picture as he did not have his camera but says, 'that the memory of this fish will forever be etched in his brain'. Congratulations John!
I don't want to detract anything from John’s accomplishments but it is too bad that he didn't get a picture especially now that every cell phone has a camera. A reminder to all Steelheaders, please remember to pack your camera or use your cell or make sure that your partner has his or her camera. 'The fish of your life' may be on your next cast!

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: There are not a lot of boats fishing the Douglas Channel this week. The boats that are heading out are mostly crabbing and prawning. Tom Blake a local angler reports catching lots of crab and lots of octopus in his prawn traps. Octopus is great bait for bottom fishing but I would rather eat prawns. Tom did also report that he landed a 12lb feeder Chinook this week. As the weather improves, more Salt water anglers and Charters will be heading out.

Hello Noel, Me again. We have been very busy getting our guests hooked up to Trophy steelhead!
This spring has been a little crazy weather wise. It has challenged us every day. We have had sunny weather most of this week but the cool nights have kept the snow melt at bay! The boat ramps have been interesting to say the least but with good equipment and a little steelhead book camp training we are getting the job done!! All guests are hooking good numbers of steelhead on the fly indicator method and swinging a leech or sculpin pattern is getting it done. The fish have been aggressive and strong, there has been the odd colored fish but most have been chrome bright and BIG!! Average catch per day has been 3 to 4 fish per angler with the odd day in the double digits.
All Region 6 rivers are starting to fish well now and it’s only getting better!

The Kitimat River is in fantastic condition this week and the weather is just as good for fishing.
We have seen an increase in catches this past week as well as an increase in the number of fishers throughout the river system. Guiding is in full swing now and most are having several fish successes on both fly and conventional gear.
I managed to get some great video footage and a few photos yesterday of Gord McKean and his guests from Alaska.

Cabo Fish Report
April 13-19, 2009
WEATHER: We had partly cloudy skies early in the week with the weekend resulting in perfectly clear skies. There was some windy days early with the wind lasting all night during the beginning of the week and tapering off a bit as the week progressed, then at the weekend the wind died to an occasional light breeze. As the winds lessened the temperatures increased. At the beginning of the week we had lows in the mid 60’s and highs in the low 90’s, at the end of the week the lows were in the mid 70’s and the highs in the mid 90’s.
WATER: Surface conditions on the Pacific side were choppy at the beginning of the week, coinciding with the winds we experienced but at the end of the week the chop had gone away and there were just some well spaced 3-5 foot swells with a light breeze on them. On the Cortez side the surface was calm with negligible swells and no chop locally in the mornings, and with some slight chop and swells in the afternoon and early in the week up to the north around Punta Gorda. Water temperatures on the Pacific side remained at 66 degrees out to the San Jaime Bank and past there to the west it warmed to 70 degrees. On the Cortez side the water was a very nice 74 degrees early in the week and on the 16th a hot spot that went to 79 degrees appeared between the 1150 spot and the Cabrilla Seamount. Immediately afterward the surface temperatures dropped and as of the end of the week we had a fairly uniform 70 degrees in the area.
BAIT: There was a mix of Mackerel and Caballito available this week at the normal price of $3 per bait. Sardinas were hard to come by this week.
FISHING:

There were reports of a couple of Blue and Black Marlin giving some adrenalin rushes out there and that action was between the 95 spot and the 1150, outside around the 1,000 fathom line.
YELLOWFIN TUNA: Once again the Yellowfin Tuna failed to show in any numbers. There were a few fish found, but they were at quite a distance from Cabo, it took several hours running time to get into the productive waters, such as they were, and once there it took quite a long time to find any fish, it there were any there. 40 miles to the southwest was where a few schools were found, and they were only school fish in the 20-35 pound class. That meant a long run on a possibility of getting a couple of small Tuna, most anglers said never mind. We did have one day of decent fish just to the south of the San Jaime with both Yellowfin and Dorado on the bite, but it was very short lived.
DORADO: Just like last week, once again it was a case of scattered fish. Almost every boat was able to get a Dorado this week, and a few boats managed to get three or four. NOTES: Took the dog to the beach this morning, nice and quiet out there with just a few people walking back and forth. I have a two hour cruise at noon and then will get to watch some golf. I am planning to get a couple of rounds in this week. If anyone out there has every played any of the courses in Sun River, Oregon, I would like to hear from you and get your opinions on them. My wife and I are going there at the end of June for a week long vacation, I need to smell some pine trees and see if I can stand wading in cold water casting a fly! Until next week, tight lines!

East Cape
Our clients found the offshore a little cool but the inshore was just right, yielding multiple species on the fly.
Cecilia “Pudge” Kleinkauf, Anchorage, Alaska, visited this week with a group of mostly seasoned Baja anglers with one angler on her first trip to Baja. They caught a variety of fish which included roosterfish, red snapper, pargo, cabrilla, sierra mackerel, pompano and white bonito all round. By the end of the trip almost everyone had achieved a personal best or a new species!
Heggie Wilson, from Park City, Utah, caught a fish on his second cast in the morning and it never slowed down. They fished the reef in front of Leonero until almost 10 a.m. for 5 different species. He ended up the day with 8 different species. it was full speed most of the day!

Enrique Soto reported that the shark fishermen were finding dorado around the shark buoys twenty miles west of the Entrada. Up at Lopez Mateos outside the Boca ten miles, there are some small yellowfin tuna with skipjack mixed in.

The fishing and conditions picked up a bit this week. Even though the fleet is only averaging about one or two sailfish a day per boat, this should improve soon.
The warm, 80° blue water is about 12 miles off the beach and several blue marlin are being hooked. The boats are averaging about one marlin hookup for every five boats each day.
Santiago, on the panga Gitana, had one decent day with his clients and released three sailfish. Not to be outdone, his brother Adan on the panga Gitana II, released four sails in one day.
The jack crevalle action bounced back to life, with lots of the larger 15- to 20-pound hard fighting fish being reported around the White Rocks, and on down to Petatlan (about 7.5 and 16 miles south of Zihuatanejo).

Dear Fishing Friends:
SUMMARY: The weather has been good all week with daytime temperatures near normal. The snow pack is starting to melt and the rivers are on the rise. The Steelhead that were holding in deep dark pools are on the move again. Both upper and lower sections of Kalum River are in good shape even though the water is rising. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is very dirty (copper colour) right now and is coloring up the Skeena River also. The main stem Skeena River, below Terrace and above the Zymoetz River is clean enough to fish for Steelhead. A good run of spring Steelhead should be coming in now. Good runs of Steelhead are coming into the many isolated coastal streams and rivers. For the Kitimat River and Douglas Channel please check out the Ron Wakita report below. There are lots of New! items posted on the website this week, please see below.
We don’t sport fish for Herring but I am happy to report commercial Herring fishery out of Prince Rupert was up this year and slightly higher than average. The roe was of good quality and fish were bigger than in recent years. Lots of Herring usually means lots of Salmon.
NOTICE There is a logjam below the highway riprap just above Nalabila Creek. Can barely make it through with a pontoon boat, attempting it with a drift boat would be dangerous. See two photos below:

TYPE OF FISH CAUGHT: Steelhead and Trout for river. Salmon, Halibut, Bottom Fish and Dungeness Crab for ocean.

FISHING THIS WEEK: GOOD
LARGEST FISH OF THE WEEK: Specie: 20-pound Steelhead Where: Secret River Angler: Gord McKean.
WEATHER: Cloudy. Showers beginning this morning. High 8. Sunrise 6:39 AM Sunset 8:31 PM. Today’s yearly average temperatures: Maximum 12 degrees. Minimum 2 degrees.
WEATHER REPORTS VIA TELEPHONE: Terrace 250-635-4192 Kitimat 250-632-7864 Prince Rupert 250-627-1155 Smithers 250-847-1958.
SKEENA RIVER: Is rising and starting to colour up as the spring run-off has started. The Zymoetz (Copper) River is coming in dirty. The Skeena River is still fishable above the Zymoetz and below Terrace. Should be a few Steelhead and Trout one can catch.
KALUM RIVER: Is in good shape and is coming up slowly. Good numbers of Steelhead are in the river now. Spring runs of Steelhead should be coming in. Fishing for them with fly or spin tackle works well.

ZYMOETZ (COPPER) RIVER: Is very dirty. The upper section is closed to angling as of December 31 but the lower section below the first canyon is open.
Fishing Report from: Ron Wakita of Reliable Guide and Charters.
KITIMAT RIVER: Easter week has been productive for Steelheaders on the Kitimat River. We received some high tides this week combined with a bump up in the river water level enticed some chrome Steelhead into the Kitimat River. I spoke to a French speaking angler Tommy on Wednesday, who had hooked four steelhead and landed two. Tommy was fishing the lower Kitimat. I spoke to another angler in our tackle store who wished to remain unnamed, who landed a Steelhead on Tuesday and another on Wednesday upriver. On Thursday I spoke to Kevin whose friend from Vernon landed a Steelhead fishing the Cable Car run. Kevin also said that they watched another angler land a big bright female on the other side of the river. This angler was drifting in a pontoon boat and put this wild Steelhead into a black tube and continued on. I explained that the angler was probably one of the Kitimat Hatchery brood collection crew collecting brood stock. The Kitimat Hatchery is looking for volunteers who are interested in assisting with Steelhead brood collection. Any interested anglers please contact me via email wakita@telus.net and I will explain the program and give you the Hatchery contact info. There is a strict protocol to be followed but it is a worthwhile project.
Mike Herzberg of Reliable Guide and Charters fished with his fishing partner on Thursday and Friday. Mike landed a 15lb. buck on Thursday and his fishing partner hooked four Steelhead and landed three on Friday. Mike also warns of a log jam located just below Saw Mill. Anglers drifting the Kitimat River please beware. Mike advises that pontoons with due caution are able to navigate through. High water may also increase the hazard. Overall the Steelheading was very good this week with fresh, bright Steelhead in the system. There should be more Steelheaders fishing the Kitimat River this Easter long weekend. Stay Tuned to this report for further updates.

DOUGLAS CHANNEL: Albert Nelson a resident of Kitimaat Village reports large schools of herring spawning in the Kitimat harbour especially in front of the Village. With the herring schooled up along the beach and with some strong winds creating some larger waves, the herring are being washed up onto the beach during the High tides. 'My brother picked up three buckets of herring right off the soccer field' said Arnold. The Kitimaat Village soccer fields are located along the shore line and with the abnormally high tides this week and high waves has created this phenomenon. Albert was in our tackle store buying herring jigs to catch the herring and was looking for a bucket for when the winds picked up again. Wow! This is first time I have heard of this happening and I was born and raised in Kitimat.
With the herring in the Kitimat Harbour, smart money says that there should be some feeder chinook in the Kitimat Harbour feeding on the herring. Many boaters were heading out for the weekend. Upon their return I will update this report. Stay Tuned.
The early indicators of the Herring run are that it is very strong this year. Herring bait fishers have reported good catches as have the commercial herring boats. This may be good signs of things to come with this season's Salmon runs. Usually when the herring run is strong the salmon returns are also very strong. Here's to a 'Great Salmon Fishing Season'
