Even Catfish are finicky |
Taste Buds ? Catfish have a more refined sense of flavor than humans. Our 10,000 taste buds may seem like a lot, but catfish can have as many as 175,000. This helps them find the exact location of their next meal. |

This past spring, rains soaked our drought striken area. So I figured it would be a good time to go check out 'The Honey Hole' The water level there had been at an all time low. When I arrived and surveyed the area, the water was up to the trees along the bank. THIS, would make it difficult to launch my canoe. I was ALONE and would have to carry all my stuff, trolling motor, battery, paddles etc... about 75 yds to the waters edge. (I haven't been getting any younger!) I have a brace on my left foot (LONG STORY) and my shoulder/neck is not the best. (ANOTHER long story) After a few trips back to the truck, I contemplated, not putting the canoe in, knowing I had to carry it back. But I did anyway. I had just eased off a steep bank. When I reached around to hook up the trolling motor. Just then, I FLIPPED the canoe. The water was COLD & deep too! All my stuff that could float, did, and was scattering to the four winds! My first thought was GRAB MY FISHING ROD!. WRONG! I relized that the canoe was sinking like a stone. I grabbed my life jacket and started to swim. (Hard to do with a fishing rod in one hand and a life jacket in the other.) DO NOT try this at home! So I chunked my rod toward the bank like a spear. It stuck, handle end in the mud like an olympic javilin. As I swam past the front of the canoe, I snatched the rope, and wrapped it around my hand, and started dragging it back to shore with me. When I close enough I could touch bottom, I stood up. The water was chest deep, and I immediately started to sink in the mud. All I could muster up was a couple of steps, then the suction from the mud stopped any forward progress. Up to this time I did not panic. As I tried to free my feet from the slimy mud, I lost one of my shoes,(I'm convinced the mud ate it!) the other was still locked in a death grip with 'MISTER MUD' My brace was on that leg! By this time(15minutes later) I was still in water waist deep and starting to get cold. BUT WAIT!!!, I have a cell phone and could call for help. Only problem was it was in my pocket and soaking wet. NOW, I started to panic somewhat. This was one of those times that you start to think 'MAN I'M SCREWED' My logical side told me not to panic, but THINK! I looked and saw a tree hanging over the water, just a few feet aways. I was only 15 or 20ft from shore. I dragged the canoe a little closer to me, and cut the rope off the front of it.(pocket knives work when wet) I made a loop in the end, and after several attempts, caught the tree. I pulled like my life depended on it. Ever muscle in my body ached from the cold water. I started to make a little head way. Just when I thought I was home free, the branch broke! A feeling of despare came over me. I rested a little, and made my mind up I was going to get out.( I had this visual of a skelaton standing in the mud) I reached into the mud and unfasten my brace, this allowed me to a few more steps closer to the tree.(but I couldn't walk far with out it.) I grabbed the outer most branch and went horizontal, pulling myself along. after what seemed like an eterinty, I was back on dry land, WET,& MUDDY, but still alive. I gather my wits, sat back and rested some more, while watching my stuff float in the lake. The wind was blowing, and my Themos got close enough for me to SAFELY get it. I had a couple cups of hot coffee, while pondering the morning event. The sun popped out, and all my problems seemd minuscule in the 'grand scheme' of things. Now determinded, and half dry, I decided to launch a BRACE, canoe & gear rescue operation. I gathered a bunch of branches, laided them out in the mud to create a bridge. I took the rope and tied it to the canoe, after I made a couple of dives to get the battery and trolling motor off, and get my brace. I used the trolling motor, wedged between 2 trees, and battery as a wench assist to help reel the canoe in.( It worked pretty good) Then lauched the canoe AGAIN! and gathered up my gear. The only Item not recovered was right shoe. I stayed a couple more hours fishing, and caught this nice catfish + a mess of crappie for dinner. You never know what you can do, until your backs against the wall, and you HAVE to. It sure would have been embarassing, to drowned that close to shore. LUCKY I DIDN'T!! THANK GOD! It was later determined 'OPERATOR ERROR' was to blame.
